Studying in Great Britain
Some foreign students may find the methods of teaching and learning in Great Britain somewhat different from their home institutions, where the teacher manages the learning process. In the UK, education is essentially ‘student-centred’, which means that you have responsibility for your own learning. Tutors, lecturers and other staff will assist and help you throughout your studies, but it is for you to organise your work and set your own deadlines and – when you have problems understanding or you experience difficulties – to seek out a tutor and ask for help.
Regardless of the type of programme you are studying, you will be expected to research and read widely. The formal classroom situation that you probably experienced at school is only a small part of degree study at university, where learning will be through various activities.
Formal lectures, which will require you to take notes, are usually delivered on specialist subjects to large groups of students together.
Seminars are discussion groups with a lecturer and a small group of students and are generally less formal. You may be requested to present a paper, or lead a discussion. Learning in seminars is a valuable experience as it builds your confidence to ask questions, put forward views and defend and explain your own understanding and ideas.
Another learning activity is working in groups on a project that is assigned by the tutor or chosen by the group. Group work offers a valuable learning experience of the subject matter under review, but also gives the opportunity to develop the skills required to successfully work with others: interpersonal, social and team-building skills.
Tutorials are when a student meets his personal tutor to discuss his academic progress. These meetings are important as they allow the tutor to evaluate the student’s progress and to identify any issues you may have, either related to your studies or any personal problems you might be experiencing.

My Study
I care for teaching that's why I entered Chuvash State Pedagogical University. It’s the oldest higher educational establishment in our republic. Some of our students live at the hostel, others rent rooms or live with their parents. For some students education is free of charge. Others have to pay for their studies.
I study at the faculty of Russian Philology. The course of study lasts five years. There are two terms in the academic year. At the end of each term we take credit tests and examinations. We learn a lot of subjects. Some of them are very difficult. Every day we have one or two lectures and practical classes. I try not to miss lectures and always take notes of them. Usually the exam questions are very detailed and I have to read much.
We have classes according to the time-table. My classes usually begin at 8.15 a.m. and last till 1.30 p.m. We have a thirty-five minute lunch break and use it for having meals in our canteen. After classes I go to the library to read and take books, to look through some new magazines and newspapers.
My favourite subjects are Russian Literature and Pedagogy. They are very important for my future work. We learn foreign languages, too.
We have a lot of homework and it takes me several hours to do it. I sometimes have to sit up to write a composition, to make a report, to translate an article from English into Russian or to learn a poem by heart.
I think that you grow as a person when you do other creative things in addition to your studies, so I take part in the social life of the University which is well-organized. I like to be rather busy than lazy. I am sure that thanks to the high level of education and up-to-date educational facilities our students will become highly skilled specialists.
