Переводится существительным или инфинитивом.
Eg.: His favourite sport is boxing.
Его любимый вид спорта – бокс (боксирование).
Определение.
Переводится существительным.
Eg.: We were waiting for his coming home. Мы ждали его прихода
домой.
Обстоятельство.
Переводится деепричастным оборотом.
Eg.: On cominghome he saw his friends. Придя домой, он увидел
друзей.
Герундию присущи черты существительного и глагола.
Черты существительного:
1. Может иметь при себе определение, выраженное притяжательным местоимением.
Eg.: I like his singing. Мне нравится его пение.
2. Может употребляться с предлогом.
Eg.: On coming home he saw Ann. Придя домой, он увидел Анну.
Черты глагола:
1. Может определяться обстоятельством, выраженным наречием.
Eg.: I like his reading well. Мне нравится, что он хорошо
читает.
2. Имеет после себя прямое дополнение.
Eg.: I like reading books. Я люблю читать книги.
3. Имеет форму действительного и страдательного залога.
Eg.: writing - being written
4. Имеет перфектную форму.
Eg.: graduated - having graduated.
Отличие герундия от причастия.
Герундий от причастия можно отличить по следующим признакам.
1. По функции.
Герундий может выполнять в предложении любую функцию. Причастие может быть только определением или обстоятельством.
2. По наличию или отсутствию предлога.
Если герундий употребляется в функции определения или обстоятельства, перед ним будет стоять предлог. Причастие же никогда не употребляется с предлогом.
Функция определения:
I saw a girl crossing the street. – Причастие.
The idea of crossing the street here is not good. – Герундий.
Функция обстоятельства.
Coming home he turned on TV. – Причастие.
On coming home he turned on TV. – Герундий.
