a) Часть составного именного сказуемого (Part of a Compound Nominal Predicate)

Инфинитив в составном именном сказуемом употребляется после глагола-связкиto be.

Model:

His dearest wish was to have a son. Его заветной мечтой было иметь сына.

Если подлежащее выражено существительным, то глагол–связкаto beпереводитсязаключается, (состоит) в том, что(чтобы) или опускается.

Model:

Our purpose is to follow the growth of plants under experimental conditions. Наша цель заключается (состоит) в том, чтобы следить за ростом растений в экспериментальных условиях. Наша цель - следить за ростом растений …  

Если подлежащее выражено инфинитивом, то глагола-связкаto be переводится значит.

Model:

To follow the growth of plants is to learn their laws of development. Следить за ростом растений - значит узнавать законы их развития.

Следующие существительные употребляются как подлежащее при составном именном сказуемом:

aim - цель intention - намерение approach – метод manner - способ step - шаг
object - цель action - действие method – метод way - способ purpose - цель
effect - действие task - задача technique - метод function-роль, функция procedure - методика

Sentences to be memorized:

He is hard to please. Ему трудно угодить.
She is easy to deal with. С ней легко иметь дело
He was difficult to convince. Его было трудно убедить.
She is pleasant to work with. С ней приято работать.

Exercise 1. Complete the sentences using the infinitives as parts of compound nominal predicates.

To move to London, to bake one of my delicious apple pies, to go skiing, to have a picnic with my friends, to clean up my living room, to study Italian, to train as a tourist guide, to go hiking to the mountains, to become a school teacher, to buy a dog, to go to the Crimea, to learn to swim, to listen to music, to wash my windows, to take dance lessons, to take my younger brother to the zoo, to write to my grandmother.

Exercise 3.Translate into Russian.

1. The main purpose of this chapter is to consider anthocyanins. 2. To determine these two phenomena is to investigate thoroughly their underlying mechanism. 3. The ultimate aim of the investigations is to correlate the observed structural and functional changes. 4. The function of this hormone will be to stimulate the secretion of progesterone. 5. The purpose of the mammary gland is to provide nourishment for the newborn child. 6. The tendency at present is to look upon the plasma membrane as a layer made up chiefly of lipoids and proteins. 7. The next aim is to emphasize the role of the liver in maintaining blood sugar levels. 8. The object of our work is to find the relationship between configuration and activity in cinnamic acid. 9. The primary function of anthocyanins is to attract insects and birds to plants for purposes of pollination. 10. The specific function of adrenocorticotropin has been to stimulate growth and production of hormones.

Exercise 4.Translate into English. Use the above-mentioned models.

b). Часть составного глагольного сказуемого (Part of a Compound Verbal Predicate).

Существует два типа составного глагольного сказуемого:

-составное глагольное модальное сказуемое(compound verbal modal predicate) состоит из модального глагола или hadbetter, would rather + инфинитив.

Модальный глагол to have выражает обязанность или необходимость, обусловленную обстоятельствами, и переводится вынужден, приходится, должен.

Model:

I have to go through the old material. Я вынужден просмотреть старый материал.

Модальный глагол to beможетвыражать долженствование, возможность, придавать сказуемому оттенок будущего времени и переводиться должен, можно.

Model:

The data obtained are to confirm this fact. Полученные данные должны (могут) подтвердить этот факт.

Must + Indefinite Infinitive выражает обязанность, необходимость, предположение, основанное на уверенности, и в зависимости от контекста переводится должен, должно быть, вероятно.

Models:

You must come and see the baby. Вы должны прийти и посмотреть на младенца.
He looks so pale. He must beill. Он так бледен. Он, должно быть(вероятно),болен.

Must + Perfect Infinitive выражает предположение, относящееся к прошлому, must в таких случаях переводится должно быть, вероятно, а Perfect Infinitive – глаголом в прошедшем времени.

Model:

He must have come. Он, должно быть, пришел.

May + Indefinite Infinitive выражает возможность, предположение, основанное на неуверенности, разрешение и переводится (в зависимости от контекста) может быть, возможно, можно.

Models:

He may return tomorrow. Он, возможно, вернется завтра.
You may order a taxi by phone. Вы можете заказать такси по телефону.

May + Perfect Infinitive выражает предположение, относящееся к прошлому, may в таких случаях переводится возможно, может быть, а Perfect Infinitive – глаголом в прошедшем времени.

Model:

He may have read this book. Он, может быть, прочел эту книгу.

Might + Perfect Infinitive выражает предположение, относящееся к прошлому, упрек или неодобрение, might в таких случаях переводится мог бы, можно было бы, может быть, а Perfect Infinitive – инфинитивом или глаголом в прошедшем времени.

Models:

He might have visited them yesterday. Может быть, он был у них в гостях вчера.
You might have phoned me and told me not to wait for you. Ты мог бы позвонить мне и сказать, чтобы я тебя не ждал.

Ought to / Should + Indefinite Infinitive употребляется для выражения морального долга или совета, относящегося к настоящему или будущему и переводится следует, должен, следовало бы.

Model:

You ought to return the book on the date fixed. Вам следует вернуть книгу в указанный срок.

Ought to / Should + Perfect Infinitive употребляется по отношению к прошедшему и выражает порицание или упрек, переводится следовало (бы), должны были.

Model:

You should have spoken to him a week ago. Вам следовало бы поговорить с ним неделю тому назад.

Can + Indefinite Infinitive в утвердительных предложениях выражает способность, умение, возможность, разрешение и переводится могу (умею).

Models:

He can play the piano. Он умеет играть на пианино.
It’s a place where you can buy everything you want. Здесь ты можешь купить все, что тебе нужно.

В отрицательных предложениях can + Perfect Infinitiveвыражает невероятность, в таких случаях canпереводится невозможно; не может быть, чтобы, а инфинитив передается сказуемым в сослагательном наклонении.

Model:

The substance cannot have dissolved so quickly. Не может быть, чтобыэтовещество растворилось так быстро.

Could + Perfect Infinitive выражает неосуществленную в прошлом возможность и переводится мог бы, могли бы.

Model:

I could have gone to the conference, but I lost my invitation. Я мог бы поехать на конференцию, но я потерял пригласительный билет.

To bind в страдательном залоге + IndefiniteInfinitive переводится со значением долженствования (с оттенком неизбежно, обязательно), связанного с условием, обещанием, обстоятельствами, расписанием.

Model:

This was bound to happen. Это должно было (неизбежно) произойти.

Примечание.

It is to be expected – следует (нужно) ожидать.

It is to be remembered – следует (нужно) помнить.

Model:

It is to be expected that these elements will unite. Следует ожидать, что эти элементы соединяться.

Exercise 5. Translate into Russian.

1. Water has to be thoroughly analysed during the epidemics. 2. Account had to be taken of the elastic properties of the body. 3. The lamprey must have existed at an early period. 4. Attention was to be paid to the climatic conditions. 5. This species cannot have immigrated from the North by two different routes. 6. Care is to be taken not to use methods of growing tissues on the surface of agar. 7. We know that previous to mutation there must have been a normal gene in place of the mutant gene. 8. The majority of the plant names have been taken straight from the chemical literature and taxonomists are bound to find some difficulty in interpretation. 9. Most species comprised in group 3 may have a very complicated origin. They may have immigrated from the South. 10. It is to be regretted that the deserved attention was not given to their results. 11.It is to be emphasized that some acids are found in very few species.12. It is to be noted that the aim was to demonstrate the production of cells.

-составное глагольное аспектное сказуемое(compound verbal aspect predicate) состоит из глагола, который может выражать начало, продолжение, завершение действия (и некоторые другие значения, указанные ниже) и инфинитива.

1. To start, to begin, to continue, to cease, to finish, etc + Infinitive.

Model:

It has startedto rain. Начался дождь.

2. To be going to + Infinitive – собираться, намереваться что-либо сделать.

Models:

I am going to meet him on Monday Я собираюсь встретить его в понедельник.
The conference is going to be held in Moscow. Конференция состоится в Москве.

3. To be about + Infinitive – собираться что-то сделать, как раз собираться что-то сделать.

Model:

The remarks I am about to make refer to single cell structure. Замечания, которые я как раз собираюсь сделать, относятся к одноклеточной структуре.

4. To tend, to go +Infinitive – стремиться, склоняться, иметь тенденцию к.

Model:

Some researchers tend (go) to overvalue the effects produced. Некоторые исследователи склонны переоценивать полученные результаты.

5. To come + Infinitive – начать что-то делать.

Model:

A biologist comes to realize the immensity of this task. Биолог начинает осознавать огромные размеры (обширность) этой задачи.

6. To manage + Infinitive – суметь, удаваться что-то сделать.

Model:

He managed to finish his work in time. Он сумел закончить работу вовремя.

7. To fail + Infinitive – не суметь, не удаться что-либо сделать.

Models:

He failed to explain these phenomena. Ему не удалось объяснить эти явления.
Certain features fail to appear in the offspring. Некоторые черты у потомка не проявляются.

8. Cannot fail + Infinitive - не может не.

Model:

He could not fail to notice the changes in the substance. Он не мог не заметить изменения в веществе.

9. To fail в отрицательной форме + Infinitive - обязательно, непременно.

Models:

He won’t fail to come. Он обязательно придет.
Don’t fail to ask me. Непременно спросите меня.

10. Существительное failure + Infinitive- невозможность, неспособность.

Model:

The failure to identify these species…. Невозможность определить этот вид…

11. Used + Infinitive - бывало, раньше.

Model:

It used to be thought that the pigment composition … Раньше считалось, что пигментный состав …

Exercise 7.Translate into Russian.

1. All of the droplets were similarly changed and so they used to repel one another. 2. Failure to show this process must be ascribed to stereo chemical factors which interfere with condensation. 3. The procedure described previously is not going to be repeated here. 4. Vegetation cannot fail to resume its progress towards the climax. 5. Many educated people, and particularly biologists, came to accept the evolutionary origin of species as a fact. 6. The modern woodlands of Britain are coming to be composed of planted conifers of foreign origin. 7. No consideration of abscission can fail to include some mention of ethylene. 8. Дополнение (Object)

Инфинитив в функции дополнения может употребляться после глаголов (to agree, to arrange, to attempt, to choose, to decide, to deserve, to expect, to fail, to help, to hesitate, to hope, to learn, to manage, to mean, to offer, to omit, to plan, to pretend, to promise, to refuse, etc.), прилагательных и причастий (able, afraid, amused, annoyed, anxious, ashamed, astonished, bound, careful, certain, content, crazy, curious, delighted, determined, difficult, due, eager, easy, fit, fortunate, free, frightened, glad, grateful, good, happy, hard, helpless, horrified, impatient, interested, keen, likely, lucky, obliged, pleased, ready, relieved, right, safe, slow, sorry, etc.)

Models:

She agreedto come at ten. Она согласиласьприйти в десять.
I’m powerlessto do anything. Я бессильна, что-либо сделать.

После глаголов to cause, to get, to lead, to make заставлять, вызывать, вынуждать, быть причиной, приводить к инфинитив выполняет функцию второго дополнения, первое дополнение, как правило, выражено существительным или местоимением.

Models:

Heat causes snow to melt. Тепло заставляет снег таять.
We got him to return to the same subject Мы убедили его вернуться к той же теме.
The facts led us to assume that… Факты заставили нас предположить, что…

Определение (Attribute)

Инфинитив в функции определения стоит после определяемого существительного и отвечает на вопрос какой? На русский язык переводиться определительным придаточным предложением (с местоимениями который, кто) с модальным оттенком необходимости, возможности или будущего времени.

Models:

The species to be included in each group are indicated on the list. Виды, которые следует включить в каждую группу, указаны в списке. Виды, которые можно включить… Виды, которые будут включены…
This is one of the important items to be insisted upon. Это один из важных пунктов, на котором нужно настаивать.

Инфинитив в функции определения чаще встречается:

а) после порядковых числительных (the first, the second) и после слов the last, the next, the only.

Models:

Jack was the first to come. Джек пришел первым.
She was the last to reach the hall. Она последней пришла в зал.
Fulton was the first physiologist to suggest this hypothesis. Первым физиологом, который предложил эту гипотезу, был Фултон.

б) после выражений, обозначающих количество (much, little, a great deal , plenty, no more).

Model:

I have no more to add. Мне больше нечего добавить.

в) после неопределенных местоимений (somebody, something, anybody, anything, no one, nowhere, nothing, etc).

Models:

I have something to tell you. Я должен тебе что-то сказать.
I want someone to speak to. Я хочу с кем-нибудь поговорить.

г) после слова-заместителя существительного one.

Model:

He is not the oneto discuss his affairs with other people. Он не тот, кто обсуждает свои личные дела с другими людьми.

д) после относительных местоимений (which, whom) с предшествующим предлогом.

Model:

They have excellent laboratories in which to work. У них превосходные лаборатории, в которых они могут работать (для работы).

Примечания.

Наречия about, shortly + Infinitive переводятся вскоре, а инфинитив глаголом в форме будущего времени.

Model:

A few accounts about to be presented are by no means a complete history of microbiology. Небольшое количество сообщений, которые будут вскоре представлены, ни в коем случае не являются полной историей микробиологии.

Сочетания, выраженные существительным + инфинитив глагола to come переводятся следующим образом:

- the generations to come – будущие (грядущие поколения),

- the years to come – будущие (грядущие) годы.

Model:

Science is inextricably bound to industry, to the generations to come. Наука находиться в сложных взаимоотношениях с промышленностью, с будущими поколениями.

Exercise 2. Make sentences using the infinitives as attributes.

To say a kind word to her, to examine the room, to listen to the news, to give her a piece of advice, to support her, to solve the problem, to admit his fault, to stay here any longer, to discuss it, to calm her, to offer her help, to watch the play to the end, to go there alone.

Exercise 3. Say who was the first (the last) to do it.

Model A: to arrive — Tom was the first (the last) to arrive.

Model B: to be invited — Ann was the first (the last) to be invited.

To complete his work, to finish the composition, to be operated on, to be examined, to offer his help, to notice them, to hear the noise, to be praised, to be told the news, to understand the problem, to learn the poem by heart, to leave the room, to refuse the invitation, to find the right answer.

Exercise 4. Translate the sentences with the Infinitive in the function of attribute.

1. They were discussing the meeting to be held the next day. 2. Dick isn’t one to ask embarrassing questions. 3. I can find nothing to laugh at. 4. John had enough money to live on. 5. I have two more exams to take. 6. There was no taxi to be found. 7. The only thing to do was to reject the plan. 8. Ann was the first to express her doubts. 9. He was nowhere to be seen. 10. Henry isn’t one to waste time. 11. There is nothing left for me to do but accept his invitation. 12. She had nowhere to go in this strange town. 13. He was the quickest to recover after the shock. 14. There is nothing to be done about it.

Exercise 5. Translate these sentences into Russian. Pay attention to the Infinitive.

1. The plants to be introduced into this region grow well under arid conditions. 2. The first measure to be taken for preventing this destructive disease is to use clean seeds for planting. 3. The excessive heat during the operation of the device was one of the problems to be solved. 4. Dmitri Ivanovsky (1864-1920) was the first to describe the virus responsible for mosaic disease in tobacco. 5. The American biochemist W.M. Stanley was the first to isolate a virus, the tobacco mosaic virus. 6. The females are the first to rise to the surface where they deposit a scintillating spawn that attracts the males. 7. 5. Обстоятельство (Adverbial Modifier of):

a) цели (Purpose)

Инфинитив в функции обстоятельство цели отвечает на вопросы для чего?, для какой цели? Может вводиться союзами in order , so as и стоит в начале или конце предложения. Переводится инфинитивом с союзами чтобы, для того чтобы, с тем чтобы или отглагольным существительным с предлогом для.

Models:

He came to my office one day in order to askme for a job. Однажды он пришел в мой офис, для того чтобы попросить у меня работу.
You’d better wait outside so as to be at hand if I want you. Вам бы лучше подождать снаружи, для того чтобы быть рядом, если вы мне понадобитесь.

Примечание.

Если инфинитив (с зависимыми словами) в функции обстоятельства цели стоит в начале предложения, то за ним следует подлежащее или глагол в повелительном наклонении. В этом его отличие от инфинитива в функции подлежащего, за которым стоит сказуемое.

Models:
