Dangerous driving in britain

In common with many countries Britain has serious environmental problems. In 1952 more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog. The government introduced new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and the situation improved a lot. Today London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from gas. In December 1991 there was very little wind in London and pollution increased a lot. As a result about 160 people died from pollution in just four days.

Pat of the problem is the new “out of town” shopping centers. In the past people often walked to shops near their homes or went by bus. Now many people drive to the new shopping centers. As a result the small shops have disappeared and more people have to travel to do the shopping. Critics say that Britain needs better ad cheaper public transport. Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London can cost about 100 pounds (about 150 US dollars). A short 15 minute bus trip can cost over 1 pound (over 1,5 dollar).

Many people are trying to reduce the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle path and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to reduce the pollution and cost.

Sometimes people take “direct action”. In1995, for example, many people wanted to stop a new road near Newbury. They built houses in trees and lived there for many months. It took a long time to force people out of the trees before work on the road continue.

SATELLITES

Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecast is sent by satellites. Some satellites have cameras which take photos of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.

Television satellites

We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers per hour- exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae facing the Earth. Sometimes it moves away from its orbit so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days. Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet are also satellites. Many of our programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.

The Earth’s biggest dustbin?

Space is not empty! Every week more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for 10- 12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes they are brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and can crash into each other.
