To turn to mush – внутри все сжало, to feel too scared

Presumption - arrogance

Fictitious – imaginaryWhen they were settled in the car Suzie asked Will what did he do. So Will answered nothing because he didn’t want to invent a fictitious job besides other things he had devised. Moreover, he didn’t want deprive Suzie the only real thing about his life.

To get round to – try but be too lazy to do (руки не доходят)When Suzie asked Will about his job she was surprised how he existed but Will explain that his father wrote a song – “Santas Super Sleight” and he got money from this one. Suzie asked why he didn’t to find a job but Will said he tried a few times but he got round to it.

To hang heavy on ones hands (time) – to spend time aimlessly (убивать время)Suzie parked the car in the Outer Circle. Will stood awkwardly on the pavement. Marcus had shown no interest and Will didn’t make a vigorous effort to get to know the boy. Will could get on well with teenagers. However, he was not shure it worked with Marcus because he looked like an old man. He was a sports and a pop music fun and knew very well how heavy time could hang on ones time.

To go nuts – to become crazy

Belligerence – militancy

Will tried to start a conversation with Marcus but Marcus made skeptics. Will used that moment to talk with Susie. He asked how often she looked after Marcus and what was up with Marcus mum. Susie answered that she was a little bit under the weather. Marcus interrupted their talk and declared that his mum went nuts. Marcus so passionately tried to prove that his mother went nuts that it remembered Will that note of amused belligerence in the voices of old people who were trying to tell you things were much worse than you wanted to pretend.

Vulnerable – fragile, sensitiveMarcus said that his mum went nuts but Suzie declared that she just needed some rest but Marcus said that Suzie met with his mum not very often and that she was crazy when they were alone together at home. Will felt that there was defensiveness in Suzies voice. He didn’t understood why this strange boy – Marcus when he had seen where you were vulnerable, he was merciless.

To take smth. at face value – принять за чистую монету, to believe

They were in the park now, and they could see the SPAT crowd over by the lake in front of them. Then everyone started to say about own problem: Will about that he kept up with life and Suzie resented that she didn’t forgive her friend she just didn’t have enough time to meet. The both felt themselves old and guilty. Will seemed that his stories about imaginary son were taken at face value. However, he still felt a little uncomfortable so he tried don’t spend a lot of time among adults and stayed out from Marcus. He did everything to avoid their company even he played with other children.

To turn to mush – внутри все сжало, to feel too scared.

When Suzie and Will were talking Marcus ran to them and declared that he killed a duck. They started to ask him why he had done that but he answered that the duck was ill and had to die. When they were staring so hard at the scene of the crime they didn’t notice that the park-keeper came and was standing right next to them. Marcus felt his insides turn to mush. This was it.

To be in the clear – to understandWhen Marcus killed the duck somebody said about that to the par-keeper and he came to clear what had happened. He said that it was a criminal offence. Marcus tried to say something in his own defense that ducks were his favorite bird, however, he did not like animals at all besides rabbits but he thought that It could help. Then park-keeper said that he was told that Marcus was throwing bloody great French loaves. So Will said that Marcus started throwing bread at the body. He was trying to sink it, because Megan here was getting upset. The park-keeper said the baby didn’t look very upset but they answered that she cried herself to sleep. Then there was a silence. Marcus understood that this was the crucial time. They waited either Marcus would be accused or the park-keeper would forget all about it. After sometime the keeper said that he would have to wade in and get it. So after this phrase they were in the clear that Marcus would not jail for the rime.

To restrain from – to constrain fromWhen they came back after the picnic they found out that Fiona tried to top herself. When ambulance came there was a long discussion about who would go to the hospital and how. Will hoped to go home but ambulance didn’t want to take Marcus and Megan, so in the end he had to drive with children and Suzie with Fiona. During the way to the hospital Will understood that Marcus wasn’t so stupid how he assumed because Marcus realized that the problem was that his mother could try to top herself again. When they arrived to the hospital Suzie had already gone and was sitting in the waiting room. Will was so interested what was happening so he couldn’t restrain himself from rubbing his hands together.

Deadbeat – loafer, bumSuzie said that doctors were pumping Fionas stomach and also that she was asking after Marcus. The evening drugged on. None of them talked much, although occasionally Marcus grumbled about the people waiting for treatment. He said that he hated this drunk people. It was true. More or less everyone in the waiting room was some kind of deadbeat – a vagrant, or a drunk, or a junkie, or just mad.

Derelict –outcastMarcus scared that somebody could thought that his mother was like this people because she took drugs and came with sick all over her. He didn’t know how they could notice the difference. But Suzie said the right thing that the people would see the difference and if they would not they say them: who could believe that Fiona was any kind of derelict with friends like this? Will supposed that everyone must have own bubble and live inside it. So if Fiona didn’t have it were here problems. Right on cue, a woman came over to see them. She said that Fiona had to spend a night in the hospital and asked if Marcus had somebody could take him for a night and Suzie took him when Fiona gave her permission. They want home.
