The Liebherr family business was established in 1949 by Hans Liebherr. The great success of his first mobile, easy-to-assemble and affordable tower crane was the foundation on which the company flourished. Today Liebherr is not only one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction machinery but is also an acknowledged supplier of technically innovative user-oriented products and services in numerous other fields. Over the years the family business has grown into what is today a group of companies, employing a workforce of approx. 30,000 in more than 100 companies on all continents.
The Liebherr Group is divided into company units of manageable size, operating independently. This is to ensure proximity to the customer and the ability to respond flexibly to market signals in global competition. The Liebherr Group’s holding company is Liebherr-International AG in Bulle, Switzerland, which is entirely owned by members of the Liebherr family.
Development and production of Liebherr products and components takes place at 29 locations, in twelve countries on four continents.
Liebherr’s technology has established itself firmly in the construction industry and in civil engineering. The company’s construction machinery program comprises complete tower crane, truck crane, hydraulic excavator, dumper truck, hydraulic rope excavator, wheeled loader, crawler tractor and loader, pipe-laying machine, concrete mixing plant and truck mixer model lines. Liebherr also supplies extensive families of product in many other sectors. For cargo handling there are ship, container and dockside cranes. In plant and equipment construction Liebherr is a supplier of machine tools, interlinked machine systems, aviation equipment and transport technology, and in the domestic appliances sector Liebherr offers a complete program of refrigerators and freezers.
To maintain the high quality standards with which its products have to comply, Liebherr attaches great importance to in-house control of key technologies. To avoid outsourcing core competences, major sub-assemblies also come from in-house development and production. They include for example the entire driveline and control technology for construction machinery, including the electrics, electronics, transmission, hydraulics and diesel engine product groups. Another example are hydraulic rams and anti-friction bearings, which are increasingly used in products of other makes as well.
