The future indefinite-in-the-past tense
В англійській мові майбутня дія, що розглядається з точки зору якогось минулого моменту, виражається окремою формою дієслова, яка зветься Future Indefinite-in-the-Past.
Цей час трапляється у розповідях про минулі події при переказуванні у непрямій мові слів або думок якоїсь особи стосовно майбутнього часу:
| In his letter Peter wrote that he would go to Warsaw in January. | У своєму листі Петро писав, що поїде до Варшави в січні. |
Future Indefinite-in-the-Past утворюється з допоміжних дієслів should і would та інфінітива основного дієслова без частки to:
| І should work (I'd work). | We should work (We'd work). |
| He would work (He'd work). | You would work (You'd work). |
| She would work (She'd work). | They would work(They'd work) |
| It would work. |
У питальній формі допоміжне дієслово ставиться перед підметом:
| Shouldwe work? | Wouldthey work? |
У заперечній формі після допоміжного дієслова вживається частка not:
| We should not work. | Weshouldn't work. |
| She would not work. | She wouldn't work. |
Future Indefinite-in-the-Past вживається переважно в підрядних додаткових реченнях, якщо дієслово головного речення виражає минулу дію:
| І thought I would come by the morning train. | Ядумала, що приїду ранковим поїздом. |
| І said I'd pack. | Я сказав, що укладатиму речі сам. |
Future Indefinite-in-the-Past вживається також у простих реченнях, коли в розповіді про минуле згадуються майбутні дії:
| We arranged to start the following Saturday from Kingston. Harris and I would go down in the morning, and take the boat up to Chertsey. George... would meetus there. | Ми домовились вирушати наступної суботи з Кінгстона. Гарріс і я виїдемо вранці і підведемо човна до Чертсі. Там Джордж зустріне нас. |
У підрядних реченнях часу й умови в англійській мові не вживається жодна з форм майбутнього часу, в тому числі й Future Indefinite -in-the-Past. Дія, що була майбутньою з точки зору минулого, в таких реченнях виражається формою Past Indefinite:
| І hoped that before wepartedhe would tell me what it was. | Я сподівався, що перш ніж ми розійдемось,він розкаже мені, в чому справа. |
| І wrote down to you to ask you not to see anyone tillI came. | Я писав вам і просив не бачитися ні з ким, поки я не прийду. |

Is your house in the centre of the city? 8. Will your mother be at home at 5 o’clock? 9. Were you free yesterday? 10. Is his answer good? 11. Will you be in town on Sunday? 12. Is mathematics difficult?
Вправа 2. Утворіть питальні форми від таких дієслів.
1. We are at the English lesson. 2. My friend was at the concert yesterday. 3. All the students are ready for the lesson. 4. They were in the garden yesterday. 5. Mary will be on duty tomorrow. 6. The lesson is over. 7. Nick was ill yesterday. 8. The schoolchildren will be at school on Monday.

Вправа 4. Перекладіть рідною мовою, утворіть нові речення, використовуючи форми теперішнього та майбутнього часів, змінюючи обставини часу.
1. I remember you had a guitar. Right? 2. You had a lot of work last week, didn't you? 3. He had a lot of mail the day before yesterday. 4. Which of you had time to watch the TV last night? 5. Did you have lunch in the canteen today? 6. How many subjects did you have for your winter exam? 7. When did you last have a meeting? 8. I hardly ever had headaches when I was young. 9. You didn't have much homework yesterday, either, did you. 10. He didn't have many subjects for his spring exam, either. 11. We had three minutes left to catch the train last time.
