TECHNICAL NOTE
TYPES OF LENSES
Cylinder lenses
Cylinder lenses have one flat and one cylindrical surface. They can have either positive or negative focal lengths. They are typically used to focus incoming light to a line, or to change the aspect ratio of an image.
Ball and specialty lenses
Ball lenses are polished spheres of glass with a short, positive focal length. They are commonly used in fiber coupling, endoscopy, bar code scanning, and as pre-forms for molded aspherical lenses. Other specialty lenses have specific applications mentioned in the Notes.
ANTI-REFLECTION COATINGS
When light travels between media (for instance, glass and air), a portion of the light is reflected – a phenomenon known as Fresnel Reflection. Typical uncoated glass optical components will suffer approximately 8-10% loss from Fresnel Reflections (depending on the wavelength of light and the index of refraction of the material). Adding an Anti-Reflection (AR) coating to the optical component can reduce that transmission loss to o.255 or less.
Edmund opticsÒ offers many of our TECHSPECÒ transmissive optics with s variety of Anti-Reflection (AR) coating options that vastly improve the efficiency of the optic, enhance contrast, and eliminate ghost images. Most AR coatings are also very durable, with resistance to both physical and environmental damage.
When specifying an AR coating to suit your specific application, you must first be fully aware of the full spectral range of your system. While an AR coating can significantly improve the performance of an optical system, using the coating at wavelengths outside the design wavelength range could potentially decrease the performance of the system.

LASERS
Edmund opticsÒ carries a growing line of optics targeted at laser applications. With years in experience in the production of optical components and systems, Edmund opticsÒ will work with you to develop a solution to meet your optical system requirements. We can deliver high quality laser optics at highly competitive prices and rapid turnaround times.
Manufacturing
Our laser grade optical components and assemblies are designed on highly homogenious glass substrates with low scratch-dig surface figures. Through advanced manufacturing technologies and state-of-the-art 3D optical profiling equipment, we can produce and qualify highly polished surfaces resulting in low wavefront distortion and high damage thresholds.
Mirrors
Our laser mirrors offer high reflectivity, at either specific laser lines or over a broad range of wavelengths, and high laser damage threshold. Our stock laser mirrors feature low absorption coatings deposited on a fused silica substrate. Polished to subwavelength accuracy, these mirrors are ideally suited for application requiring minimum scattered light.
Coatings
Our thin-film optical coating manufacturing facility can coat components that require extremely precise spectral and polarization control. We can produce high-precision color, UV and IR filters, anti-reflection (AR) coatings with excellent quality. All our laser grade filters are manufactured using hard coatings and use no adhesives resulting in a high degree of environmental durability.

TECHSPECÒ ACHROMATIC LENSES
Achromatic lenses consist of two optical components cemented together to form an achromatic doublet, which is computer optimized to correct for on-axis spherical and chromatic aberrations. Our doublets are available with a single layer MgF2 coating or two broad-band coating options for the visible or visible-NIR spectra. For NIR doublets optimized for 700-1550 nm, see page 50. For more information on the advantages of our edge-blackened lenses, visit our website.
TECHSPECÒ COMPOUND PARABOLIC CONCENTRATORS (CPC)
· 250 and 400 Acceptance Angles
· 2.5 mm and 5.0 mm Exit Diameters
· Ideal for Concentrating Solar energy
TECHSPECÒ CPCs are designed to efficiently collect and concentrate distant light sources. With acceptable angle options of 250 and 400 , our CPCs are able to accommodate a variety of light sources and configurations. Compound Parabolic Concentrators are critical components in solar energy collection, wireless communication, biomedical and defense research, or for any applications requiring condensing of a divergent light source. Please contact our sales department for custom coatings on the entrance and exit faces, or for custom sizes and configurations.
LASER SAFETY EYEWEAR
Edmund opticsÒ offers a wide range of laser safety eyewear covering the most common laser wavelengths and applications in both polymer and glass filters. Two polymer series of eyewear are available, Laser-CardÒ and Laser-LineÒ.
Laser-CardÒ safety goggles and glasses
A reflected laser beam focused on the retina by the eye’s optical system can result in severe and often irreparable damage.
WARNING: Because of this potential for eye damage, the degree of protection required in each circumstance should be determined by the safety director, the industrial hygienist, or the individual responsible for the safety programme.
The impact-resistant polymer in Laser-CardÒ goggles employs absorbers that protect against scattered or reflected radiation from most commonly used lasers. Because the protection is provided by absorption there are no hazardous reflections produced by the protection devices themselves. The absorbers are homogeneously dispersed throughout the polymer so laser protection is not affected by minor scratches or marring of the lens surface. Comfort is key and Laser-CardÒ spectacles and goggles have been designed to be lightweight and comfortable. The soft-vinyl design provides plenty of room for those wearing prescription eyeglasses. Each goggle and spectacle is colour coded and clearly stamped with the type of laser beam against which it protects and the attenuation density provided.
