UNIT FIVE. Aides and Volunteers
Text study
It is important to note that college training or certification in special education - mental retardation did not contribute to teacher effectiveness. This lends some support to the notion that training or certification alone does not ensure competency.
We feel that the teacher of the retarded, whether "certified" or not, must:
1. Realize that students first of all are individuals and, second, are mentally retarded.
2. Be skilled in the use of several approaches or methods of educating the mentally retarded.
3. Keep an open mind about diagnosis and not prejudge or stereotype students' learning abilities.
4. Keep learning tasks at the level of the students.
5. Be able to measure pupil progress both formally and informally.
6. Continue professional training by in-service workshops, professional meetings, and so forth.
7. Be able to work effectively with other professionals.
8. Be able to effectively communicate with students and parents.
9. Be emotionally stable.
10.Be physically fit.
A teacher aide is an employee hired to relieve teachers of time-consuming, noninstructional tasks so that teachers may devote more time to instruction. An aide should act and perform tasks under the supervision of the teacher. An aide should be able to work with children, be of accepting and pleasant disposition, emotionally stable, maintain a belief in the education of children and be willing to work with and be interested in learning from the teacher or any other professional working with the children. The following specific services can be expected from an aide:
1. Assist pupils to move from place to place in an orderly manner. Example: School bus to classroom and classroom to toilet, lunchroom, or playground.
2. Assist pupils with the management of their personal clothing, particularly after toileting.
3. Arrange classroom or outdoor work area for planned activities.
4. Assist the teacher in preparation of materials needed for the instructional program.
5. Assist the teacher with the lunch and snack program.
6. Assist the teacher with group activities.
7. Assist the teacher in maintaining good housekeeping standards.
8. Assist the teacher in maintaining cordial relationships between home and school.
9. Relieve the teacher for a duty-free lunch period.
Volunteers are unpaid individuals who simply enjoy the privilege of an opportunity to assist in the development of the mental retardation. Volunteers may be members of service clubs, students, senior citizens, parents, or any interested adults. Their services might include planning and assisting in class parties or field trips, transportation, and providing individual guidance to students engaged in activities.
The value of aides and volunteers is often underestimated. Because they perform so many functions and provide needed individual attention to students, they contribute to program quality, improvement, and maintenance.
