GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, TERRITORY, NATURE AND CLIMATE

The Republic of Belarus is situated in the center of Europe. It borders on Russia to the east, Lithuania and Latvia to the north, Ukraine to the south, and Poland to the west. It stretches about 650 km from west to east, and 560 km from north to south.

Belarus covers the area of 207,700 square kilometres. It lies on the Great East European Plain, which stretches from Poland to the Urals. Most of the region is flat, with occasional hills and uplands. The highest points of the country are the mountains Dzerzhinskaya and Lysaya with the heights of 345 and 343 metres above the sea.

The republic has a developed hydrographical network - 20.8 thousand rivers and more then 10 thousand lakes. The country has four river basins: the Western Dvina basin in the north, the Nieman basin in the west, the Western Bug in the south-west, and the largest one – the Dnieper and its tributaries - the Pripyat, Berezina, and Sozh rivers - in the east, central, and southern portions of the country. The largest of the lakes is Naroch and the deepest one is Dolgoye, both are in the north of the country. Naroch National Park, Pripyat National Park, Braslav Lakes National Park and Berezina biosphere reserve are established to preserve the unique aquatic life of the regions.

Forests cover about one quarter of the land. They are mostly mixed deciduous and coniferous woods. The Belavezhskaya Forest Nature Reserve, in south-west Belarus, is the largest primeval forest in Europe, extending across the Polish border with a substantial proportion of its area lying in Belarus. The Belavezhskaya Forest has been on the World Heritage List since 1992.

The climate of the country is continental with moderating marine influences affecting the north-east. Average January temperatures range from -8° C in the north-east to -4° C in the south-west, with maximum July temperatures in the range 17-19° C. Annual precipitation averages 530 mm on the plains area and 710 mm on higher ground.

NATURAL RESOURCES, INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE

Mineral resources in the republic are not abundant with the exception of deposits of potassium salts, which are considered to be the second largest in Europe and are used in fertilizer manufacture. There are some deposits of oil and natural gas, but they are not fully exploited. There are deposits of combustible slates, coal and brown coal, ferrous and non-ferrous ore, dolomites, halites, and phosphorites on the lands of the republic. The reserves of peat, refractory clay, loam and sand for the manufacture of glass, various construction materials are great. There are also some mineral springs.

The country used to be one of the most developed industrial republics within the Soviet Union. Despite all adversities it managed to preserve a considerable part of its industrial and technological potential.

Though the recourses of oil are not abundant, there are two large refineries, which process thee local oil and also the oil imported from Russia. Chemical plants operate near the potash deposits and the oil refineries. They produce mineral fertilisers and a wide range of chemical products, a considerable part of which is exported to other countries. There are major truck and tractor plants in Minsk and Zhodino, and tractors, motor vehicles, and farm machinery are exported to other countries. Other economic activities include lumbering and woodworking. Minsk, the capital, produces about one third of the republic’s industrial output. Several railroad lines cross Belarus, and Minsk is linked by air with many cities of the continent.

Belarus ranks as a flourishing agricultural region despite its rather cool climate and the areas of swampy or sandy soil. Livestock production, especially cattle and hogs, and dairy production are based in areas with good pastures and large amounts of land planted with fodder crops. The main commodity crops grown for food are rye, oats, potatoes, and sugar beets. The country is self-sufficient in agricultural production.

LEISURE

Today leisure is often regarded as time left over after caring for the needs of existence, such as eating and sleeping, and for subsistence, such as work or education. This leftover time is to be used as each individual chooses. Studies suggest that the average adult spends about 80 to 85 hours weekly for existence and about 35 to 40 hours for subsistence, leaving about 40 to 50 hours of leisure time.

Some people view leisure simply as recreation. Others view it as a state of being free, as an attitude of mind that aids in experiencing the reality of the world. Many people consider leisure the main objective of life, and work merely a means to reach this objective. Whatever definition we may use, leisure is the time we can spend at our discretion. Some people do or watch sports, some prefer reading, others take up a hobby.

Hobbies are either chosen, or they arise from an individual’s interests, skills, daily work, tastes, ambitions, or past schooling. Stamp or coin collecting are examples of hobbies based on deliberate choice. Making model airplanes can be something to do for a pastime, or it might develop as a result of service in an air force or as an airline pilot. Designing computer programs is a hobby based on work experience or schooling.

All hobbies involve activity, but some involve more than others do. Collecting – whether of antiques, coins, or first editions of books – is relatively passive compared to doing one’s own paintings or making furniture.

There have traditionally been four types of hobbies – those relating to history, nature, handicrafts, and the arts. Recently, with advance in electronics, many individuals have made computer use a hobby, while other use videocassette cameras to make their own movies. There can be considerable overlap between some types, especially between hobbies relating to the arts and those that have to do with the past. Scrimshaw, for instance, is an art, but it is also a kind of memorabilia relating to 19th century sailing. Many hobbies require both collecting and creating.

ECOLOGY

The term “ecology” was introduced by the German biologist Ernst Heinrich Haeckel in 1866. Ecology shows that people cannot regard nature as separate and detached. Any changes made in the environment affect all the organisms in it. Ecology is sometimes confused with environmental programmes and environmental science.

Our planet is a closed system. There is no outlet and there is no inlet. We can get resources only from our planet, and we are doomed to live with all the waste and pollution we make. Human activity is now threatening the basis of all life on the Earth with the accumulation of pollution and environmental destruction. The Northern Hemisphere countries are on a high level of industrial progress. The consumption of resources is too high. The risks are too great. The amount of waste and pollution signifies that the methods of production are not efficient enough. In the Southern Hemisphere poverty forces the population to exploit the resources and meager soil to an extent that cannot be sustained in the long run.

Human activities have caused numerous problems. The destruction of ozone layer and accumulation of carbon dioxide results in global warming. It leads to climate change, to the rise of sea level, to changes in traditional agriculture. Extensive use of land results in soil erosion. Deforestation is another problem. Cutting forests for farmland and timber reduces the production of oxygen and increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

There are problems that can be solved only internationally. Such problems as litter pollution, noise pollution, pure drinking water and some others may be solved locally, by national and local governments. But we can help solve some problems by our individual choices. We can recycle metal, plastic, glass, paper. We can use in our flats LED lighting, which is ten times more economical. We can use less water just by turning off water while cleaning teeth.
