| 1. | Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest and the most prestigious universities in Great Britain. They are often called collectively Oxbridge to denote an elitarian education. Only very rich and aristocratic families can afford to send their sons and daughters to these universities. |

The normal length of the first degree course is three years, after which the students take the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). Some courses such as languages or medicine may be one or two years longer. M.A. or M.Sc. denotes Master of Arts or Science, higher degree, usually confer after a year of postgraduate study. Oxford and Cambridge cling to their traditions such as the use of Latin at Degree ceremonies, their special academic dress is worn at the examinations. |
