Степени сравнения

3.1.1. По первому типу (присоединением аффикса -er в сравнительной степени, и -est в превосходной степени) степени сравнения образуют следующие прилагательные:

· односложные: great – greater – the greatest, big – bigger – the biggest, fat – fatter – the fattest;

· двусложные, оканчивающиеся на -y, -ow, -er, -le, -ure, -some: funny – funnier – the funniest, narrow – narrower – the narrowest, clever – cleverer – the cleverest, obscure – obscurer – the obscurest, noble – nobler – the noblest, handsome – handsomer – the handsomest;

· двусложные с ударением на последнем слоге: polite – politer – the politest, precise – preciser – the precisest, severe – severer – the severest, sincere – sincerer – the sincerest;

· некоторые другие наиболее широко используемые двусложные прилагательные: common – commoner – the commonest, quiet – quieter – the quietest, pleasant – pleasanter – the pleasantest.

3.1.2. По второму типу (с помощью вспомогательных слов more в сравнительной степени и the mostв превосходной степени перед словарной формой прилагательного) степени сравнения образуют остальные двусложные и многосложные прилагательные: interesting – more interesting – the most interesting, modern – more modern – the most modern.

Исключения: good – better – the best, bad – worse – the worst, little – less – the least.

ЗАПОМНИ:

· в некоторых устойчивых выражениях используется устаревшая сравнительная форма lesser: the lesser of the evils, the lesser breaches of the law, the Lesser Bear, the lesser known writer;

· far – farther – the farthest (используется относительно расстояния), far – further – the furthest (употребляется относительно времени и расстояния; или в значении добавочный, дополнительный):

The tree stood at the farther end of the garden.

Do it without further delay;

· old – older – the oldest (используется по отношению к возрасту), old – elder – the eldest (употребляется по отношению к старшинству в семье и обществе):

My older brother is a doctor.

This elder statesman is known not only in our country but also abroad.

ЗАПОМНИ: Прилагательные superior (высший, выше, лучший, лучше (по качеству) и inferior (худший, хуже (по качеству) не имеют степеней сравнения, и после них употребляется to вместо than.

Прилагательное и его сочетаемость

ЗАПОМНИ: некоторые прилагательные омонимичны соответствующим наречиям: fast (быстрый) – fast (быстро), straight (прямой) – straight (прямо), early (ранний) – early (рано), hard (тяжелый, трудный) – hard (тяжело, трудно), long (долгий) – long (долго), wrong (неправильный) – wrong (неправильно).

Упражнение 17. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на прилагательные, и определите их степень сравнения:

1. He is proud to think that his Puppets have given satisfaction to the very best company in this empire.

2. In music, in dancing, in orthography, in every variety of embroidery and needlework, she will be found to have realized her friends’ fondest wishes.

3. "MISS JEMINA!" exclaimed Miss Pinkerton, in the largest capitals.

4. Honest Jemima had all the bills, and the washing, and the mending, and the puddings, and the plate and crockery, and the servants to superintend.

5. But her face blushed with rosy health, and her lips with the freshest of smiles.

6. We have selected her for the very reason that she was the best-natured of all.

7. His conversation was a thousand times more agreeable to her than the talk of such of her own sex as she now encountered.
