Alex's working day

As Alex is a first-year cadet, he doesn't only study at the University but he also lodges there. Four other cadets share the living quarters with him. He only goes home for the occasional weekend. His working day starts at 7 a. m. He wakes up and does physical exercises. To tell the truth I don't know what makes him be so demanding of himself: he jogs every morning despite ofrain or snow. Then he has a wash, makes his bed and sorts out his belongings for the classes. To tidy everything up is not an easy thing to do in his living quarters. Some boys are really hopelessin that, so they get into trouble sometimes. They must learn to look after themselves. Well, Alex puts his uniform on. It looks a bit scruffy. He hopes to get a new one soon. His breakfast is ready at 8 o'clock. So Alex hurries up to the messroom. At least the food is good. 8.30 a. m. is the time for a line-up. An officer usually gives the cadets some general advice concerning their duties. Alex finds out what he is to do. He keeps watch either in the galley or in the messroom or in the living quarters. To work in the galley is not the watch Alex looks forward to particularly. He can't stand that duty. It's not his cup of tea. When not on watch, Alex never misses classes. He is a hard worker. It's typical of him to spend hours in the library and studying. At 2.30 p. m. he goes to the messroom to recharge his batteries. It's high time to get back to the reading-room and to learn again. He usually spends evenings in a very relaxed way. He tries to have a rest and listens to music in his living quarters. He has his supper at 6 o'clock. By 10 o'clock he feels sufficientlyexhausted to call it a day. He crawls into his bed and reads for a while. He certainly has hectic days. lodge[lodз] жить living quarters [΄kwo:təz] кубрики occasional[ə΄keıзənl] редкий truth[tru:θ] правда demanding[dı΄ma:ndıη] требовательный despite of[dıs΄paıt] несмотря на sort outразбирать belongingsвещи hopeless безнадежный look afterзаботиться scruffy[΄skrLfı] неряшливый at least[li:st] по крайней мере concerning[kən΄sə:nıη] касающийся find outузнавать either...or[΄aıðə] или...или galley[΄gælı] камбуз look forward to... с нетерпением стремиться, ждать particularly[pə΄tıkjuləlı] особенно, очень one's cup of teaв чьем-то вкусе missпропускать recharge one's batteriesподкрепиться it's high timeпора relax[rı΄læks] расслабиться, отдыхать sufficiently[sə΄fıòəntlı] достаточно call it a dayзаканчивать дела crawl [kro:l] ползти hectic[΄hektık] занятый, сумасшедший
