Некоторые глаголы не могут иметь форму Continuous, так как в их значении уже содержится идея непрерывного действия.

1. Глаголы ментальной деятельности: to know, to believe, to feel, to think (= have an opinion), to doubt, to guess, to imagine, to mean, to realise, to remember, to recognize, to suppose, to understand.

  • I believein God. Я верю в Бога.
  • I don't recognizehim. Я не узнаю его.
  • I meanthis Monday, not the next one. Я имею в виду этот понедель­ник, а не следующий.

2. Глаголы выражения отношений: to love, to like, to dislike, to hate, to prefer, to care, to appreciate, to adore, to seem/appear.

  • Не lovesmusic. Он любит музыку.
  • I hategetting up early. Я ненавижу рано вставать.
  • I appreciateyour help. Я ценю вашу помощь.
  • Не seems (to be) a nice man. Он, кажется, хороший человек.

3. Глаголы пяти чувств: to see, to hear, to smell, to taste, to touch.

  • The food tastesgood. Эта еда хороша на вкус (вкусная).
  • I smellsomething burning. Я чувствую, что-то горит.

4. Глаголы, выражающие абстрактные отношения: to be, to have,, to contain, to depend, to belong, to concern, to consist of, to deserve, to fit, to include, to involve, to lack, to matter, to resemble, to cost, to measure.

  • It doesn'tmatter. Это не имеет значения.
  • Не lackstact. У него нет такта.
  • Не deservesan award. Он заслуживает награды.

5. Глаголы, обозначающие влияние или эффект: to owe, to astonish, to impress, to please, to satisfy, to surprise.

6. Глаголы обладания и желания: to own, to possess, to have, to need to want, to wish.

!NB Глаголы look at, listen to, mean (намереваться), think (иметь в мыс­лях) могут употребляться в форме Continuous.

  • She isalways looking atthe child with love.
  • Don't turn the radio off. I'm listening tothe news.
  • I've been meaningto call you since morning (= intending).
  • What areyou thinkingabout?

!But: I thinkthe film is boring (= have an opinion).
