Life in the city and in the country
People live in different places: settlements, villages, towns and cities. Country people leave peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams for the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds.
There are many reasons for that. One of them is looking for a job. Towns or cities appear around new big factories or plants. These enterprises need workers. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so more people come to live in the area and the city grows.
In every large city there is a business part where big companies have their offices. This area is usually situated in the city centre.
There are some more advantages that attract people to towns and cities. People prefer to live in houses that have all modern conveniences such as central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, a lift, a chute, an air conditioner. In a city one can find many places to have a good time: museums, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, cafes and bars, dancing halls.

Different types of houses
In many towns of England cottages, or homes are built one near another, in one long row. There is a small garden at the back of the house and still a smaller one in front of it.
On the first or ground floor there are usually two rooms, and on the second, or upper floor, also two. In the bigger of the lower rooms the family cooks meals, eats and lives. It’s a kitchen, or a living – room. It usually has three doors, one of which leads out to the street. There is a table and some chairs in the room. On the wall near the fireplace you can see a large calendar with a bright-coloured picture. A lamp hangs over the table.
In the suburbs of big cities we can see a lot of pretty, clean country houses, detached and semi-detached. Fine gardens and well-kept lawns, and flowers are everywhere.
In the miles of heavy industry the air is thick with the smoke of factories, the houses are old and dirty, and look all alike: two stories high, a smoky bay-window in front, a few steps leading into a poor tiny garden, a half-dead tree in it and some sad-looking flowers covered with dust, and grey with smoke.
