Saint-Petersburg University of the Ministry of the Interior is one of the biggest higher educational institutions in the system of law enforcement professional education in Russia. It was founded in 1998 as a result of integration of three independent colleges: Saint-Petersburg Police Academy, Saint-Petersburg Military College of Internal Troops and Saint-Petersburg Fire Safety Institute.
The University trains highly qualified specialists for various militia services. The term of training at the University is 5 years. After graduation from the University the students get a diploma of a lawyer and get the rank of lieutenant of militia. The graduates of the university work as criminal investigation officers.
The university has about 10 faculties and more than 50 departments of general, law and special subjects. The main faculties are:
1. Criminal investigation officers training;
2. Operational detectives training;
3. Correspondence courses;
4. Finance and economic training;
5. Psychological training.
There are correspondence faculties of the university in Murmansk, Novgorod, Pscov, Petrozavodsk, Stavropol and other places.
The main aim of teaching at the university is to develop professional knowledge and job performing ability. To become a law enforcement expert of high professional standards, students must get good knowledge of such sciences as: the History of State and Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Civil Law, Criminalistics, Constitutional Law, Family Law, Crime Psychology, Operational Detective Work and many others.
The students get a certain level of qualification in different fields, such as driving, shooting, computer process technique and others. They are also taught professional police knowledge. They learn to interview witnesses and suspects, to search a crime scene.
In order to build up the physique and develop defensive skills[2] the students have martial training. It’s quite necessary for their future profession.
Our university has well-equipped classrooms, lecture-halls, auditoriums, libraries, dormitories, gymnasium. After classes students are usually engaged in sports, student scientific societies or self dependent work.
