Felixstowe in for 120 tonne SWL cranes

Subject to obtaining approvals to redevelop its southern port complex, Hutchison’s Port of Felixstowe will be sourcing 13 additional superpost-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes and 50 RTGs for delivery to the remodelled facility between. Preliminary tender documents have already been issued.

The quay cranes, to be delivered in batches of four, four and five, are required to have an outreach sufficient to handle a 23-wide deck stow and, breaking records, an SWL of 120 tonnes at full outreach to enable them to handle 4 x 30 tonne 20fts under 20-40-45/double twinlift (tandem-type) spreaders.

Currently, the four 80 tonne SWL-68.2m outreach (25-wide) cranes ordered by DPA from ZPMC for delivery to Jebel AH next June and expected to work with telescoping tandem-type spreaders are considered the biggest container cranes in the world. The installed power of these DPA cranes is a massive 3 MW but the Felixstowe requirement will be even higher.

The 50 RTGs, to be delivered in lots of 14, 14 and 22, will stack 1 over 5/7 + 1 with four wheels per corner. Their SWL is required to be 60 tonnes for 2 x 30 tonne 20ft twinlifting.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the Trinity Terminal expansion at Felixstowe has officially opened for business. Incorporating six hectares of backup land behind the existing Trinity Terminal, phase one increases the port’s storage capacity by 6,500 TEU.

A total of 47 hectares of backup land was reclaimed and levelled during the construction of the Trinity III expansion and the channel deepening. It is expected that a further section of storage area at Trinity Terminal will be opened early next year. The quay is expected to be fully operational by July.

When complete, the Trinity Terminal extension will provide 270m of quayline, dredged to 15m alongside and able to handle the latest generation of containerships simultaneously. This additional quay will extend the deepwater berths on Trinity Terminal to 900m.
