In every town there are dozens of shops, and going shopping is one of the most important of the housewife's duties. An En »lishwoman, as a rule, deals with only one grocer, one butcher, one milkman and one baker. She may as well phone the butcher and the grocer early in thi; morning and order what she wants. Then she doesn't go to the shops herself. She dots not pay each day but receives a bill each week. At the end of a week, on Saturday, there are several bi Is to pay.

Sometimes a person sees something advsrtised in a newspaper or on television that he would like. He may write for it and ask to send it C.O.D.(cash or delivery). When the article arrives, he pays the postman. If the person has a banking account he generally pays by cheque.

The most important rule for a businessman is to keep his word and to be honest. Besides, punctuality is very important for business and social appointments.

The businessman should observe various rules. There are some main rules of introduction which are useful to remember: men are introduced to women; young people to older ones; old friends to newcomers; young girls to married.

Men should always stand when people аre being introduced, ladies may remain seated. British and American people usually shake hands especially when formally introduced, but they do not always shake hands with people they see often. Instead they smile and say a greeting. Letter-writing is an essential part of business. In spite of the development of telephone, telex and telegraphic communication the writing of letters continues. In fact most telephoned and telegraphed messages have to be confirmed by letters.

So every good businessman should be competent in writing effective business letters in English. Business letters are usually typed on notepaper bearing a specially designed heading which provides the reader of the letter with essential information about the organization sending it.

TELEPHONING

People engaged in trade with foreign countries have to use various means of Communication: telephone conversations, personаl contacts (meetings, business talks), letters, telexes, telegrams (cables), telecopies (facsimiles).

Telephoning is the quickest way of communication. It is used, as a rule, to get or pass on information. Important telephone conversations, e.g. concerning prices, terms of payment or claims, are to be confirmed by letter.

If you want to ring somebody up, you pick up the receiver, wait for the dialing tone and then dial your number (or press the button). If you are not sure of the number, you look it up in the telephone directory (book).

When you leave Ukraine, you will be asked to present the customs declaration. Foreigners may not leave the country with hryvna or hard currency in excess of the amount declared on arrival. Ukrainian citizens may not leave die country with more than $1.000 and 85 hryvnas. Artwork can be good value in Ukraine. Prices are much lower than in the West. The government prohibits the export of art or antiques produced before 1945. In order to export works of fine art produced after 1945, you need to obtain a license from the Culture Department of the Kyiv City Administration. When you arrive in Great Britain by plane you first go through the passport control.
