VI. Modernizing the Republic, 1920- present.

III. Expanding the Republic, 1820-1860.

As the new Republic was framed, it started to acquire new land, set up new settlements, which gradually developed into new states and were admitted to the Union. The key word “frontier” (meaning “the borderline between settled and unsettled land”) gives the coloring to the whole period and has been shaping the character of the nation ever since.

IV. Uniting the Republic, 1860-1877.

The Union, however, was divided into Southern states (where slaves were widely used) and Northern states (where slavery was prohibited). The issue of slavery had to be resolved, since it prevented the Republic from being one whole. The Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history, put an end to slavery and brought victory to the North. Since then the USA has become one nation, undivided.

V. Nationalizing the Republic, 1877-1920.

During this period the USA started to get interested in foreign affairs. Ironically, the nation, which had recently become independent, started to acquire colonies itself (Cuba, for example). It also joined the 1st World War (against Germans). In short, during this period the new nation started to shape its foreign policy.

VI. Modernizing the Republic, 1920- present.

This period is characterized by extreme diversity, which is probably the key word of the period. Among other things, it is characterized by

- Economic growth, followed by the Depression (1929 - 1933) and global financial crisis (2008- present)

- Series of wars:The Second World War (1941-1945), Korean War (1950 - 1953), Vietnam War (1964- 1972), the War in Grenada (1983), Gulf War (1991), Iraq War (2003), etc.

- Civil Rights Movement (1960s)

- Alaska and Hawaii became states (1959)

- Republican and Democratic Parties form the political life of the USA.
