Westminster Abbey West Door


The oak chair which was built by order of Edward I in 1300 has been used for every coronation since 1308. There are many monuments and statues here. Just inside the West Door is the tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The soldiers of all ranks, killed in the First World War, are buried here.

Oak Chair

Many kings, queens, and outstanding people of England are buried in this great church – Queen Elizabeth I, Robert Burns, Isaac Newton, Shakespeare, and many others. The Abbey’s founder is buried in the Chapel of Edward the Confessor.

Not far from Westminster Abbey is Buckingham Palace. This building is known to everybody as the Queen’s official London home. It is a mixture of old and new. It was build for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. Some of the rooms of the palace are open to the public. You always know if the Queen has arrived home. When she is in Buckingham Palace, the flag is always raised.
