WEIGHTLIFTING

Weightlifting, also called Olympic weightlifting or Olympic-style weightlifting, is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. The two lifts currently competed are the clean and jerk and the snatch. The clean and press used to be another weightlifting technique, which is not practiced today. Athletes compete against one another to determine who can lift the heaviest weight. Such competitions match lifters with similar body weights, as they compete by weight classes.

The compound word “weightlifting” is also often used to refer to weight training. Athletes participating in other sports sometimes lift weights to increase their functional strength and flexibility. Weightlifting requires a combination of power (strength and speed), technique, flexibility and consistency. Weightlifting tests explosive strength with smaller weights as the lifts must be executed more quickly and with more mobility because of a greater range of motion during the lifts.

In the snatch, lifters bend down and grasp the barbell. They then lift the bar in a quick motion, raising it above the head while squatting under it. In the clean and jerk, lifters bring the bar to a resting position at the shoulders, and then jerk the barbell over the head by thrusting out the arms and legs.

Competitors compete in one of eight (seven for women) divisions, called weight classes, determined by their body mass. These classes are currently: men’s: 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg and 105+ kg, and women’s: 48kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, and 75+ kg. In each weight division, competitors compete in both the snatch and the clean and jerk, and prizes are usually given for the heaviest weights lifted in the snatch, the clean and jerk, and the two combined (in total).

Important steps before any competition starts are weigh-in, verification of entries and drawing of lots. The order of the competition is up to the lifters – the competitor who chooses to attempt the lowest weight goes first according to the lot number. Weights are set in 1 kilogram increments (previously 2.5 kg increments), and each lifter can have a maximum of three lifts, regardless of whether lifts are successful or not.

Weightlifting has been an event in the Summer Olympic Games since 1896. The competitive sport is controlled by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) founded in 1905 and based in Budapest.
