Seminar 3. The Noun as Part of Speech. The category of number

Plan

1. The general characteristics of the noun as part of speech (obligatory and optional).

2. Classification of nouns (semantic and morphological).

3. The category of number. Traditional and modern interpretations of number distinctions of the noun.

Questions and Tasks:

1. Read the recommended books.

2. Give the definition of the category of number in terms of the oppositional theory.

3. Speak about the morphemic structure of the singular and plural forms of the noun. Name the productive and non-productive allomorphs.

4. Comment on the peculiarities of the nouns weather, knowledge, information, oxygen, news, linguistics, measles, on the one hand, and scissors, outskirts, oats, clothes, belongings, police, cattle, on the other hand.

5. Comment on the traditional grammatical meaning of the category of number (oneness :: more-than-oneness).

6. Give ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments as regards the opposition expressed :: non-expressed discreteness.

7. Give examples of the nouns which have the plural form or singular form which does not correspond to its grammatical meaning.

8. Speak on the view points of different scholars on the category of number (B.A. Ilyish, M.Y. Bloch, L.S. Barkhudarov, G.N. Vorontsova, I.P. Ivanova, B.S. Khaimovitch and B.I. Rogovskaya, O. Jespersen, H. Sweet).

9. Account for the ability of the collective nouns such as family, crowd, army, government, crew to display a full paradigm of number.

10. Classify the nouns as regards the category of number.

2. What makes the category of case in English disputable?

3. What are the weak points of the so-called “prepositional”, “positional” and “post-positional” theories?

4. What ensures a peculiar status of the inflexion “-s”?

5. Speak on the peculiarities of the gender distinction in Modern English.

6. Explain and show the difference between the category of gender in English and Russian.

7. Is there any category of gender in English? Give “pros” and “cons”.

8. Do you share the viewpoint of M.Y. Bloch as regards the category of gender in Modern English?

d) the semantic classification of the verb;

e) the morphological classification of the verb.

3. The finite / non-finite forms of the verb. The verbals. A general outline of verbals: the categorial semantics, categories, syntactic functions.

4. The infinitive and its categories.

5. The gerund and its categories. The notion of half-gerund.

6. The present participle and its properties.
