Seminar 6. The verb: the categories of person, number and tense

Plan

1. The category of person and number: traditional and modern interpretations.
2. Time and Tense. The philosophical category of Time and the grammatical category of Tense.
3. The category of tense: the traditional viewpoint.
4. The category of tense in terms of a binary opposition.
5. Modern conceptions of English tenses.

Questions and Tasks:

1. Speak on the person and number of the English verb. Explain the difference between the categories of person and number and the category of tense.
2. Disclose the categorial meaning of Tense. Speak about the category of tense as an opposition of two categorial forms: that of the past and that of the non-past. Give examples and the analysis of the morpheme of the Past Tense and Non-Past Tense forms. The productive and non-productive allomorphs as variants of the Past tense morpheme.
3. Comment on the categorial semantics of the Past and Non-Past forms.
4. Explain the fallacy of the traditional interpretation of the Non-Past form as “Present”.
5. What is meant by the inner controversial character of the category of tense?
6. There are various interpretations of the category of tense: that of Professor A. I. Smirnitsky and Professor I. P. Ivanova, that of Professor M. Y. Bloch. Speak about their viewpoints and those of English and American scholars: G. Comrie, H. Sweet, F. R. Palmer, M. Joos, W. Francis, Quirk and alia.
7. Speak on the problem of the Future Tense. Comment on the L. S. Barkhudarov’s viewpoint.
8. Comment on the problem of the so-called Sequence of Tenses.

Plan

1. The problem of aspect in the English language. Treatment of aspect in Modern English.

2. The opposition continuous :: non-continuous and its categorial semantics. Perfect :: non-perfect and its categorial semantics.

3. M. Y. Bloch about two aspective categories.

Questions and Tasks:

1. Give the definition of the category of aspect.
2. What is the difference of the continuous forms from the perfect forms?
3. Can the opposition of perfect :: non-perfect forms form a separate grammatical category?
4. How does A. I. Smirnitsky account for the opinion that the opposition of perfect :: non-perfect makes up a special, self-sufficient category which he calls a category of time correlation?
5. Comment on the opinions of other scholars on the problem of aspect (B. Strangy, M. Joos, Graustein and alia, G. N. Vorontsova, B. A. Ilyish etc.).

SEMINAR 8. THE VERB: THE CATEGORY OF VOICE

Plan

1. The definition of the category of voice in terms of the traditional interpretation of the category.

2. Non-passivized verbs.

3. The categorial semantics of the passive and non-passive forms.

4. The problem of the category of voice in the English language.

5. The transitivity of the verb and the voice.

6. The verb to be + participle II.

Questions and Tasks:

1. Give the definition of the category in terms of a binary opposition as passive :: non-passive. Comment on the passive voice form as a strong member of the opposition, its grammatical meaning and means of expression.

2. Can all the verbs be passivized? Name non-passivized verbs.

3. Name semantic and contextual limitations which account for the scarce use of the passive forms of some verbs.

4. Disclose the categorial semantics of the passive verb forms and non-passive verb forms.

5. Comment on the problem of the so-called reflexive, reciprocal and medial voices.

6. How can you distinguish between to be + participle II as a compound nominal predicate and a simple verbal predicate?
