Capitals, Flags and National Emblems

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It consists of four parts: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

England is the largest and the richest country of the UK. The capital of England is London.

Stonehenge, one of the most famous pre-historic places in the world, is situated in England. The national emblem of England is a rose. The English flag is the Saint George’s cross, red one on the white field. Saint George is a patron Saint of England.

Scotland is a land of brave warriors. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.

Loch Ness Monster has no scientific explanation but thousands of people believe it is real. The national emblem of Scotland is a thistle. The Scottish flag is the Saint Andrew’s cross, white X-shaped one on the blue field. Saint Andrew is a patron Saint of both Scotland and Russia.

Walesis a beautiful land. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. The heir to the throne of England has a title of Prince of Wales. The national emblems of Wales are leeks or daffodils. The Welsh flag shows a red dragon on the white and green field. Saint David is a patron Saint of Wales.

Northern Ireland has a strong cultural tradition: songs, dances, literature and festivals.

The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The national emblem of Northern Ireland is a shamrock and a red hand. The flag of Northern Ireland is the Saint George’s cross with a red hand and a crown in the middle. Saint Patrick is a patron Saint of Northern Ireland.

The flag of the United Kingdom is often called the Union Flag, or Union Jack. It consists of 3 flags: the Saint Andrew’s cross, the Saint Patrick’s cross and the Saint George’s cross.
