10.1. Конструкция Used toописывает действия, чувства и состояния, которые были привычными и повторяющимися в прошлом, но не свойственные в настоящем.

Конструкцияused toимеет одну и ту же форму в единственном и во множественном числе и не изменяется по лицам. После used toследует инфинитив.

e.g. John used toeat a lot of sweets. (John doesn’t eat many sweets any more.) – Раньше Джон ел очень много сладостей. (Джон больше не ест так много сладостей.)

He used to play football every Saturday, but now he doesn’t. – Раньше он играл в футбол каждую субботу, а сейчас нет.

They used to be happy together, but now they argue all the time. – Раньше они были счастливы вместе, а сейчас они все время ссорятся.

Вопросительные и отрицательные предложения образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола did/ didn't и глагола use to без окончания -d.

e.g. DidJohn use to eat many sweets? – Джон раньше ел много сладостей?

John didn't use toeat so many sweets.- Джон раньше не ел так много сладостей.

+	I/He/They used to have a car.
?	Did you/ he/ they use to have a car?
-	I/He/They didn’t use to have a car.

Примечание:

1. Оборот обычно не используется в вопросительной форме. Вопрос чаще задают в Past Simple, а отвечают, используя оборот used to.

e.g. Did you go dancing when you were young? – Of course, we did. We used to go dancing every weekend.

2. С оборотом часто используется слово never: We never used to be close friends.

3. Не путайте с глаголом use[ju:z]: I use a knife to cut an apple.

4. Для оборота used to нет соответствий в настоящем времени.

5. Для действий, произошедших только однократно в прошлом, используется Past Simple: e.g. Last night I drank champagne.

Exercise 1. Джон Браун выиграл лотерею в прошлом году и его жизнь существенно изменилась. Используйте конструкциюused to, чтобы описать какой была его жизнь до выигрыша и Present Simple, чтобы описать его жизнь сейчас.

e.g. John used to live in a small house, but now he lives in a big house.

Last year live / a small house go to work / by bus eat / at home watch TV/ in the evening spend / his holiday / at a camp-site

Now live / a big house go to work / by car eat out go / the theatre spend / his holidays/ travelling

Exercise 2. Достройте группы предложений так, чтобы у каждого предложения было 3 формы: утвердительная, отрицательная и вопросительная.

e.g. He used to smoke. – He didn’t use to smoke. Did he use to smoke?

1. I used to live alone.

2. My children didn’t use to watch TV a lot.

3. Did she use to eat a lot of sweets, when she was a child?

4. You didn’t use to like him.

Exercise 3. Дополните предложения правильной формой конструкции used to и глаголом, данным в скобках. Первое предложение дано в качестве образца.

Exercise 4. Задавйте вопросы и дайте краткие ответы в соответствии с образцом.

A: Did you use to play with your friends when you were five?

B: Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.

Exercise 5. Дополните предложения, используя оборот used to...+ подходящий глагол.

e.g. Tom gave up smoking last year. He used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day.

2. We came to live in Manchester a few years ago. We ____ in Nottingham.

3. I rarely eat ice cream now but I ____ it a lot when I was a child.
