It is the largest of the peninsulas on the western side of Britain. It consists of a complex of mountain ranges, which are called the Cambrian Mountains. The highest area occurs in the north, especially around Snowdon (1,085 m). Although Scotland takes up one third of the territory of the British Isles it is not very densely populated mostly due to its northern location.
