THE GERUND

Task 1. Study the following table.

Герундий является неличной формой глагола, которая сочетает в себе свойства глагола и существительного. В отличие от инфинитива герундий передает оттенок процесса действия.

В русском языке нет формы глагола, соответствующей английскому герундию. Формы герундия совпадают с формами причастия (см. стр 259).

Герундий может переводиться на русский язык существительным, глаголом в личной форме или неопределенной формой глагола, деепричастием.

Подлежащее Their having studied rocks helped them in their research. То, что они изучили горные породы, помогло им в их исследованиях.
Дополнение The supervisor did not object to the report being made by the student at the seminar. Научный руководитель не возражал, чтобы доклад был сделан на семинаре.
Определение We understood the importance of carrying out the experiment in the laboratory. Мы понимали, как важно провести эксперимент в лаборатории.
