Трудности в употреблении предлогов
A. At и to
At не употребляется с глаголами движения.
| We went to the cinema. We arrived at the cinema. | Мы пошли в кино. Мы приехали в кино. |
B. Near и next to
Next to имеет то же значение что и beside (рядом с). Near означает «недалеко от», но не всегда.
| Peter always sits next to Mary. I live near the sea, it's only ten miles away. | Питер всегда сидит рядом с Мэри. Я живу около моря, оно всего в 10 милях отсюда. |
C. Above и over
Оба предлога означают «над, сверху», но over предполагает большую близость, даже соприкосновение с объектом. В некоторых контекстах существует разница в употреблении.
| There was something written above/over the door. There was a plane high above them. Put this blanket over you. | Над дверью было что-то написано. Высоко над ними летел самолет. Накройся этим одеялом. |
D. In и at: Места
In относится к городам, странам и может означать позицию 'внутри' места.
| She lives in Paris. They arrived in Peru. He's in the kitchen. | Она живет в Париже. Они приехали в Перу. Он – на кухне. |
At большеотносится к местам конкретного назначения чем означает 'внутри'.
| She lives at home. They met at the cinema. They met in the cinema. | Она живет дома. Они встретились у кинотеатра (место). Они встретились в кинотеатре (внутри). |
E. Предлоги в конце предложения
| Who are you waiting for? You are very difficult to live with! That's the company that I work for. | Кого ты ждешь? (Вопрос) С тобой жить очень трудно! (Инфинитив) Это компания, на которую я работал. (Относительное придат.) |
Предлоги, являющиеся одновременно наречиями
Некоторые предлоги могут использоваться как наречия без дополнения.
