Exercise 1. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. At that moment she wished she hadn't sent that letter to him. 2. “I wish I were there with you,” he said with deep regret. 3. She says she wishes I were a thousand miles away. 4. I wish she didn't look so sad. 5. The professor wishes I studied harder. 6. We wished he hadn't come so late yesterday. 7. I wish you had seen the play. It was a great success. 8. I wish they had introduced their friends to me at the party. 9. She wishes her father didn't know about it. 10. He wished they hadn't noticed his embarrassment.

Exercise 2. Paraphrase the following sentences using the Subjunctive Mood after the verb wish.

Pattern: It’s a pity you are so busy these days. – I wish you were not so busy these days.

1. It’s a pity we won’t be able to reach the village before sunset. 2. My friend regrets he hasn't told you all at once. 3. It’s a pity that you didn't send your son for one of us last night. 4. What a pity you are leaving so soon. 5. Unfortunately, he didn't receive the answer before Christmas. 6. I am sorry I made you upset by bringing such depressing news. 7. The patient was sorry that he hadn't fulfilled al the doctor’s instructions. 8. She was sorry she had no money to buy a toy for her son. 9. They were disappointed that they hadn't persuaded her. 10. It’s a pity we are not so young as you are.

Exercise 3. Open the brackets using the Subjunctive Mood in wish-clauses.

Exercise 4. Translate into English.

She would be considered beautiful bot for her thin lips. 7. If it were not for my heavy bag, I’d prefer to walk. 8. Nobody would say he is an American but for his accent. 9. If it hadn't been for Teddy’s naughtiness, he would be the best pupil in my class. 10. If it were not for my imagination, I wouldn't get into trouble so often.

Exercise 2. Paraphrase the sentences according to the patterns.

If the guide hadn't been so helpful we would have lost our way.

Exercise 3. Paraphrase the sentences from Exercise 2 according to the pattern.

Pattern: a) If it were not for my sore throat, I would go to school. – But for the sore throat, I would go to school.

b) If it hadn't been for my sore throat yesterday, I would have gone to school. – But for my sore throat yesterday, I would have gone to school.
