Being in a fire

If disaster strikes, will you be calm in the face of calamity or panic in those precious moments when every second counts? Here is one of horrifying scary situations.

You think it won’t happen to you. Plane crashes, tornadoes, building going up in flames – those are things you read about and see on TV. Injures caused by fires, falls, drownings and other unpredictable calamities are the leading causes of death for women up to the age of 34. But don’t push your panic button just yet. There are things you can do to prepare for such emergencies – and to up your odds for surviving any disaster.

“Like most people, I never even considered to possibility of ever being in a fire,” says Danielle Hall, a 21-year-old pharmaceutical salesperson from Boston who lost everything she owned – and almost her life - when her apartment building went up in flames. “I heard the smoke alarm go off at about three-thirty in the morning, but I just assumed it was only a neighbor burning toast. I was so unprepared for an emergency that I panicked and made just about every mistake in the book. “Danielle made her first error when she opened her front door without checking to see if it was hot. The fire in the hall, fueled by the oxygen from inside her apartment, immediately rushed in. Then she ran into her bedroom, inhaling smoke because she didn’t know to stay low, and she didn’t close the door behind her. The fire quickly followed. “I ended up having to jump out my third-story window,” she says. “It’s a miracle I’m alive.”
