Educational system in Russia

1. Russians have always shown a great concern for education. The right to education is stated in the constitution of the Russia Federation. It's ensured by compulsory secondary schools, vocational schools and higher education establishment. It is also ensured by the development of extramural and evening courses and the system of state scholarship and grants.

2. Education in Russia is compulsory up to the 9th form inclusive. The stages of compulsory schooling in Russia are: primary education for ages 6-7 to 9-10 inclusive; and senior school for ages 10-11 to 12-13 inclusive, and senior school for ages 13-14 to 14-15 inclusive. If a pupil of secondary school wishes to go on in higher education, he or she must stay at school for two more years. Primary and secondary school together comprise 11 years of study. Every school has a "core curriculum" of academic subjects.

6. The system of higher and secondary education in Russia is going through a transitional period. The main objectives of the reforms are: to decentralize the higher education system, to develop a new financial mechanism, to give more academic freedom to faculties and students. Задание 1. Выскажите свое мнение по данным высказываниям:

-Some people think it’s impossible to get a proper education today;

-Some people say that to get proper education you should study at Cambridge or Oxford University… Is it true?

-What does a proper education mean?

Задание 2. Прочтите письма и выскажите главную их идею. These are letters. Read them and tell the group mates about the ideas in them.

A. Education is the process of teaching someone. It is all-round development of a person. Education isn’t confined to school studies… Each day or hour teaches us something that may be of vital importance to us now or in the future. It’s the process of learning which goes on from the cradle to the grave.

Proper education doesn’t only mean holding degrees. There are people who have never gone to school or college, are illiterate, and yet are better citizens than many educated people.

Nowadays you wouldn’t make a career or achieve great results without a high education. I advocate hot only higher education, but specializing in your field. I have met many people less qualified with no high degrees, yet they are doing a better job than the qualified trained people. That’s why I lay stress on the fact that proper education is a process of learning and each moment teaches us something new and important that can help us reach our goals.( Deepak Sharma, India)

B. Proper education is supported to be aimed at the development of a person. It’s the development of various capabilities and the desire to change. I mean positive changes, of course.

There are lots of ways to become educated, many subjects that can be studied and numerous fields that can be explored. “A good education is one that teaches a student to think”, Edith Hamilton said. I completely agree with these words. I think well-developed thinking abilities are the result of proper education.

Proper education includes some methods of teaching students the ways of self-development and self-perfection. True education doesn’t only help people acquire good knowledge, but also forms positive features of their character, like patience, kindness, understanding, initiative, and others.

To be well-educated means to be highly-qualified. A high qualification is the result of proper education. Proper education presupposes well-organized education: interesting materials, problem-solving, project-making, research work and the like. The argument to get higher education is usually an economic one today; I mean people need much knowledge and many skills in order to get a good job. But getting deep knowledge and becoming skillful is also important for other aspects of people’s lives. Here we can think, for example, of political literacy – the knowledge and skills needed to exercise rights. (Professor Gert Biesta, France)

Задание 1. Прочитайте текст, выпишите в словарик новые слова, переведите.

Some of you dream of making their own business and trying to do your best at school to become a businessman. But sometimes getting good education is not enough to succeed in life. I realized it after reading a story “Does Education mean Good Judgment”.

This is a story about a man who sold hot dogs by the road-side. He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers. He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio. His eyes were weak, so he never watched television. But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hot dogs. His sales and profit went up. He ordered more meat and got himself bigger stove.

As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from college, joint his father, then something strange, happened.

The son asked, “Dad, aren’t you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?” The father replied, “No, but tell me about it.” The son said, “The international situation is terrible. The domestic problem is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad time.”

The main thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, and listened to the radio, he ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly. So, the next day, father cut down his order for the meat and buns, took down the sign and was no longer enthusiastic. Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his dog stand. And his sales started coming down rapidly.

The father said to his son, “Son, you were right. We are in the middle of a recession. I am glad you warned me ahead of time”.

- An intelligent man is not always a man of good judgment;

- Don’t forget about common sense when following somebody’s piece of advice;
