Mining helps everyone.

Mining is a great industry, a great socioeconomic developer, a great technological contributor, a great raw-material provider for modern society and a great career choice. We dig holes in the ground so huge you can see them from space. And we build giant honeycombs of every shape imaginable inside the earth. We build brand new rock-rubble mountains where valleys and grasslands once were. We smash up some of the rock and add all kinds of chemicals to extract what we are looking for and dump the rest of it into another big hole that can also be seen from space. And then, after we have pocketed billions and billions of dollars in profits without paying a dime to the public for their resource, we walk away leaving this great big mess behind us when we are done. It's a great industry.

It really is a great industry, whether the public realizes it or not. We are one of the most technologically advanced industries on the planet. Some of the biggest and most sophisticated pieces of equipment in the world are used in mining and processing. We can operate our equipment directly and remotely with intricate tracking systems, sensors and monitors. We may be the most advanced industry ever in land stabilization and rehabilitation technologies. Our computer, mechanical and electrical systems and our process and environmental controls and technologies are second to none. And we are, perhaps, the only industry that is required to post financial surety to guarantee that we clean up after ourselves, which we now do better than just about any industry you could name. So, why does the public still perceive our industry as the same dirty mess-making goons they thought we were 100 years ago.

11. Coal is generally classified by what is known as "rank". Ranking is determined by the degree of transformation of the original plant material to carbon. The ranks of coals, from those with the least carbon to those with the most carbon, are lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous and anthracite. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
12. Coal consists of a complex range of materials, and coal from one deposit may differ greatly from that of another. These differences result from the varying types of vegetation from which the coal originated; the depths of burial, and the temperatures and pressures at those depths; as well as the length of time the coal has been forming in the deposit. The varying amount of mineral matter in a coal deposit may also have a significant effect on its properties and classification. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
13. The highest rank, and hardest coal, is anthracite. It is foud almost exclusively in remote regions of northern British Columbia and the Yukon. Anthracite is not being mined in Canada at present. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
14. In addition to carbon, coals contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and varying amounts of sulphur. High-rank coals are high in carbon and therefore heat value, but low in hydrogen and oxygen. Low-rank coals are low in carbon but high in hydrogen and oxygen content. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
15. Bituminous coal, ranked second highest, is found in Alberta, British Columbia and the Maritimes. Bituminous coal can be metallurgical -- used to make coke for the steel industry -- or thermal, used to generate electricity. In 2002, bituminous coal accounted for 29.7 million tones (Mt) or approximately 45% of Canada's total coal production. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
