New York

1. There is no city like New York. It is known as “The City That Never Sleeps” and is the biggest commercial and cultural center in the world. It was founded 300 years ago in the southern part of New York State, at the mouth of the Hudson River.

2. New York is the largest city in the United States. It is known as a “melting pot”, because people of different races and nationalities make up its population. Over 8 million people live in Manhattan. About 13 of every 100 people in New York were born in another country. More than 80 languages are spoken throughout the neighborhoods and streets of the city.

3. New York Manhattan – the heart of the city – is only one of the 5 boroughs in this great metropolis. Manhattan Island was bought from Indians for a handful of trinkets that cost 24 $. Today Manhattan is the centre of business and finance. Numerous skyscrapers house banks and offices of American business.

4. There are thousands of things to do and places to visit for tourists. The most famous landmark must be The Statue of Liberty – a symbol of freedom. It was built in New York Harbor in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France.

7. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great art collections from all over the world. Guggenheim Museum has one of the world’s finest collections of contemporary art.

8. Central Park is used by thousands of New Yorkers and visitors every day. This park is larger than Monaco! Families walk their dogs and young people ride their bikes and roller-skate. Some people come here just to relax. They walk, sit in the sun, listen to music, or go to the zoo.

9. New York is one of the leading manufacturing cities in the world. The most important industries are those producing paper products, vehicles, glass, chemicals, machinery. New York has a heavy traffic. The sea encircles many of the city areas and the ships go over or under New York traffic routes.

First Aid

1. When an accident happened first aid is terribly important and you can save lives if the right action is taken. They say that ninety per cent of first aid is common sense, and only ten per cent is specialist knowledge.

2. If someone is not breathing, you must give him artificial respiration, and most people have to know how to do that. If the person is bleeding, it must be stopped. And of course, medical help must be sought and someone must decide whether the victim can be taken to the hospital, or whether the victim should be left alone.

3. On the subject of burns some people put cream or grease or butter on, and this in fact makes the burn hotter. What should wee do about burns? First of all you need to decide how bed it is. If it is a minor burn, the best thing to do is to put the burnt area under the cold tap, or slowly pour on iced water. This should be done for about ten minutes and it stops the heat from spreading. However, if it is a bad burn, what we call a third-degree burn, do not touch it. You really should get for his kind of burn expert help immediately. Cover the burn very lightly with something clean like a sheet or a handkerchief and then go straight to a hospital. Do not give a person drinks, especially alcoholic ones, because if the patient needs an operation he cannot be given an anesthetic. if the patient complains of thirst, he should washed his mouth with water and not swallow.

4. At the scene of a car accident first of all you should check that the victims are breathing if they are not, give artificial respiration. The most common injuries in car accident are fractures and bleeding, so the second thing to do is stop the bleeding. Thirdly, do not move the victim unless it is absolutely necessary. I any bone are broken the injury could be made much more by moving the victim. You should keep the victims warm, loosen any tight clothing and try to reassure them until expert help arrives.
