Personal protective equipment should be relied upon only to afford protection against the risks that remain after all other reasonably practicable steps have been taken. This is chiefly because personal protective equipment does nothing to reduce the hazard, and can protect only the person wearing it, leaving others vulnerable. It should be noted that the use of personal protective equipment may in itself cause a hazard - for example, through reduced field of vision, loss of dexterity or agility.
