The three wishes. An old english fairy tale
Poor husband and wife sit near the fire talking about their life. They are very poor and need money. They discuss what they want. The husband says: “I want to open my own sop”. “And I want to help other poor people who have no money like us.” – says his wife. “But we are not in the time of fairies! I know what to ask a fairy if I meet her!”
And suddenly a beautiful young lady appears in their room. She says: “I want to give you three wishes. But be careful with them!”
The husband and wife are very surprised. They begin to discuss the first wish, but can’t decide what they want. They are tired and hungry and the wife suddenly says: “I want to have a good sausage for our supper.” And a long thick sausage falls on their table. The husband is very angry. “This is a bad wish! You are a stupid woman! I wish this sausage stick to your nose!” The sausage jumps up and sticks to the poor woman’s nose.
The husband understands that he himself is even more foolish than his wife.
“It is your fault,” says the husband.
“It is yours,” says his wife.
And they start to fight.
Finally they understand that they have only one wish left. What can they wish? They wish the sausage to fall on the table, which it did.
The only good thing these poor people have from the fairy is the sausage, which they eat for supper with good appetite.

POLICE WORK
Police control public order and prevent and detect crimes. The basic police mission is to enforce laws. The history of police forces in England began in 1829. The British police became the world’s first modern organized police force with the name the London Metropolitan Police. Soon similar organizations appeared in other countries.
The British police officer is a well-known figure. They walk in pairs down the streets or drive specially marked police cars. They keep law and order. “Bobbies” is one of their nicknames. “The cops” is another nickname.
In England each of 52 areas has its separate police force. The forces co-operate with each other but usually each force operates in its own area. Sometimes, if a crime is serious, a Chief Constable (the most senior police officer of a force) asks for the help of London’s Police force which is at Scotland Yard.
In most countries the police carry guns. In Britain they don’t. Only on special occasions, e.g. terrorism, armed robberies etc.
