What is the difference between state schools and independent schools in Britain? Nine out of ten children in the UK are taught in schools belonging to the public education system (these schools are financed by the government). The other children enrolled in private schools (which are also called "independent" schools), the most exclusive private schools such as Eton or harrow, referred to as "public schools", but they should not be confused with state schools, as education in such public schools, of course, is not free. Schools are classified according to the age of pupils and called a little differently in the public and private (independent) education. However, in General the education system in the UK consists of:
- preschools (where children aged 3-4 years);
- primary schools (age of pupils is from 4 to 11 years);
- secondary schools (age 11-18 years) and
- universities and colleges (18+).
- Public education / public school system
In most public schools, especially elementary level, mixed classes, with an enrolment of both girls and boys. These schools can be confessionem educational institutions, and belonging to one of the most popular faiths (e.g., Catholic schools, Anglican, Jewish schools, etc.). All public elementary schools are required to adhere to the requirements of the national curriculum, approved by the government, and to prepare students for testing at various stages of learning appropriate to their age.
Any child aged 5 to 16 years has the right to attend public school in the UK, while his parents are in the country on long term visa (any visa which lasts for more than 6 months – working, student, business visa, etc.). If the parents are outside of the UK, children under 16 years of age can obtain an education only in private schools.
Independent education / private schools
In the independent sector of education can meet the school "just for girls" and "boys only", although now increasingly there is a trend to blended learning. Unlike the public sector, private schools have the right to assert their own curriculum and to decide whether their students pass the tests in accordance with the national curriculum. An increasing number of schools makes a choice not in favor of the national curriculum – meaning that students of private schools are trained on much less limited and more diverse programs. These programs are not overwhelmed by the constant testing and is not limited to requirements follow a clearly specified rate. In addition, class sizes in private schools are generally smaller than public primary schools - number of pupils in them, as a rule, does not exceed 15 people. Therefore, teachers can devote more time and attention to the individual needs of each student.
Private schools may be a "day" and "the five-day schools" (students live at school five days a week, and then go home for the weekend) or "pensions" (in the schools of this type, children are sent home only for the holidays). In most cases the age of the students in the five-day boarding schools and boarding starts at 11 years, but in some schools accept children aged 7 to 9 years.
The academic year is divided into three semesters (fall, spring and summer), between which the disciples are resting on vacation. English a fairly long break between semesters (generally, such holidays are called Christmas and Easter) and a short ("half") in the middle of the semester. The academic year begins in early September and ends in the summer, and the timing of the end of the school year in public and private schools may vary. All the state schools finish the school year closer to 20 July, but private schools have the right to decide this question at their discretion so they the school year can end on any day from late June to late July. Also quite often the management of private schools extends Christmas and Easter holidays, and the start and end dates for half-holidays in private schools can vary from school to school.
