Policy of the discipline:

All students shall attend all practical exercises. In case of missing any practical exercises for a valid reason, a student can receive the tasks and consulting from the teacher on the missed exercises individually. The students shall not be late for classes. Any missed practical exercises shall be completed in the computer class.

As all academic work of students during the semester is based on the rating-point system, the students shall timely fulfill and deliver the work strictly following the schedule. Supervised activities: 1) Knowledge, 2) Practical skills; 3) Communication skills; 4) Legal competence; and 5) Self-education (Independent work of the student).

The supervision is scheduled in the same logical sequence as the curriculum.

Those students, who do not pass all Intermediate control, are not allowed to take the quiz.

The students can attend classes only in white coats.

1. Program:

Introduction

Development of computer technologies, their implementation in medicine and health care requires that the health care workers carry out the analysis of morbidity, maintain the medical documentation, process medical and social data using standard procedures, including modern computer information technologies.

Purpose of the discipline

To establish a system of knowledge and skills in the use of information and communication technologies in education, which are the basis for the formation of competence of medical students in the application of information and communication technologies in education and public administration, as well as familiarization with the methods of healthcare informatization.

To teach how to use electronic services provided by E-Government.

Tasks of training:

- Formation of the ability to use modern computer programs in one’s professional activities;

- Use of “Medical Statistics” software package in biomedical research;

- Formation of abilities and skills to compile algorithms and programming tasks in Pharmacy;

- Formation of the ability to use local networks and Internet;

- Familiarization of students with the goals and objectives of the Program of creation of "Electronic Government" in Kazakhstan, the analysis of current state of informatization in state bodies and the main areas and mechanism for implementation of the program.

Learning outcomes:

· Formation of the cognitive component (knowledge)

The student should know:

- Mathematical and logical bases of computing;

- Computer operating principles;

- Processing and distribution of data in biomedical systems;

- Use of computer systems in medicine and healthcare;

- Basics of algorithmization and programming;

- goals and objectives of the Program of creation of "Electronic Government" in Kazakhstan, main areas and mechanism for implementation of the program;

- Architecture and basic components of E-Government infrastructure in RK.

· Development of operational skills (practical skills)

The student should be able to:

- Use the Internet in his professional activity;

- To compile and write the simplest algorithms for solving medical issues.

The student shall be aware of:

- Basic data processing technologies (text & table editors, data bases);

- Internet operation technique.

· Axiological components (communication)

- Ability to speak and prove one's point.

- Ability to work in the team and leadership skills.

· Legal competencies

- The Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 11.01.2007 N 217-III "On informatization".

- Main articles directly referring to informatization.

- Types of electronic information resources.

- Mandatory requirements to means of handling, storage and backup of electronic information resources in state information systems.

- Registration of electronic information resources and information systems in the public register of electronic information resources and information systems.

- Order for interaction of the state information systems within E-Government.

- The rights of individuals and businesses to access electronic information resources and order of their granting.

· Skills of continuous learning and self-education

- Working with literature;

- Internet resources;

- Educational and scientific materials in electronic form;

- Preparation of presentations and case abstracts;

- Preparation of reports and illustrations.

Prerequisites of the discipline

Study of the «Computer Science» course in a medical institute shall be based on the school courses of «Computer Science» and «Mathematics».

Methods of teaching and learning:

· Practical exercise:seminars, case studies, business games, analysis and discussion of cases, etc.

· Independent work of the students:working with literature, solution of cases, tests, preparation and defense of scientific abstracts, essays.

The criteria and rules for assessing knowledge:

· Ongoing monitoringis carried out during practical exercises

Purpose – systematic verification of assimilation of theoretical material, the ability to use theoretical knowledge in practice.

· Practical exercise:

ü Recitation (the student must come for classes prepared on the subject, on the issues specified in the guidelines).

ü Computer-based testing (the student shall answer questions referring to the basic knowledge and skills, theoretical issues on the topic);

ü Study of cases (each lesson, the student must complete an individual task to obtain certain skills, solve typical problems);

ü Practical tasks are checked at the practical lessons.

· Independent work of the student:

ü Defense of:
• abstracts;
• essay;
• demonstration of presentations on the topics.

ü Follow up of independent tasks.

· Verification of practical tasks on the PC.

Requirements to each type of independent work of the student are described in the guidelines on independent work of the student.

· Intermediate control:

Computer-based colloquium and verification of practical skills.

· Final control:

Quiz (testing and verification of practical skills) with the account of the results of current supervision and intermediate control.

Time for consulting:Before the quiz.

Time for intermediate control:weeks8, 11, 15.

Time for final control:end of the semester according to the “Organization of teaching and learning process control”.
