A Master’s degree

I started university 4 years ago, when I was 19, and I’m doing a master’s degree. The course lasts 1/2 years. There are 2 terms a year. I work in the library a lot because – like many postgraduates – I have to write lots essays, draw, etc. I also have to take exams. Last term I failed one and had to take again. I got the results two weeks ago, fortunately I passed this time. When I’ve got my master’s degree I want to get a good job or do research for PhD.

Specific character of modern life makes high demands of all our people, their inner world and their professional skills which are mainly determined by the level of their education.

In our state all its people have the right to education which is guaranteed by the Constitution of Kazakhstan . Having got their secondary education in schools or gymnasiums, the can enter any higher educational establishment.

The higher education in Kazakhstan is considered to be one of the best in the world due to:

1) High standard of education.

2) Solid theoretical base.

3) Stimulation of innovative process by combining theoretical disciplines with scientific research.

4) Leading role in humanities and applied sciences.

5) Competitiveness of the Russian diplomas.

6) Cheaper fees compared to those in foreign universities and colleges.

Keeping to the best national traditions, the national system of higher education is being constantly modernized. Today Kazakhstan needs highly skilled and creative specialists, who not only meet the demands of science, up-to-date production and culture, but are capable to foresee the prospects of their further development.

There are various types of higher educational establishments in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Universities, various teacher-training colleges, colleges of advanced technologies and technical colleges.

The most known Universities of the UK are Oxford, Cambridge, Eton, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool and some others.

The British Universities and colleges are relatively small compared to the American Universities including several colleges and professional schools. They comprise a number of faculties: theology, liberal arts, medicine, natural science, law, philosophy, engineering, agriculture, economy and some others.

The academic year consists of 3 terms. Vacations, as rule, are Christmas, on Easter and in summer, but they are mostly the periods of individual studies.

The Universities of the United Kingdom grant the following degrees to their graduates:

1) Bachelor degree – after a three-year course of studies and results of the examination.

2) Master degree – after a further one/two-year course of studies.

3) Doctor degree usually awarded for research and thesis.

Research is an important feature of the University work. Many instructors/lecturers, postgraduates and senior students are engaged in research.

The USA Universities and colleges are divided into public and private. At present there are over 2000 higher educational institutions in the United States of America. Among them 1200 are private, the rest being public.

It is more prestigious to get a degree a private college or at a private University where the quality of education is always better and this can make a difference in the job market later on.

Almost half of all American Universities and colleges are liberal arts colleges and Universities, training their students in languages, law, history, philosophy, etc. The rest ones are professional.

Among the USA largest and most known Universities: Harvard, Yale, Colombia, the Universities of Washington, New York, California, Stanford, Boston and some others.

Higher education in the United States is very expensive. Only 1 of 4 American families can afford it for its children. Nowadays the most expensive higher educational establishments in the USA are Harvard, Yale, Columbia and some others. Only children of the American elite can study there, for there, for their fees are about 22 000- 25 000 $ a year. As a rule, their graduates occupy the highest posts in the American Society, Government and Forces.
