КОНТРОЛЬНОЕ ЗАДАНИЕ № 1

Для того чтобы правильно выполнить задание 1, необходимо усвоить следующие разделы курса:

1. Имя существительное. Множественное число. Артикли и предлоги как показатели имени существительного. Выражения падежных отношений в английском языке с помощью предлогов и окончания –s. Существительное в функции определения и его перевод на русский язык.

2. Имя прилагательное. Степени сравнения имен прилагательных. Конструкции типа the more... the less.

3. Числительные.

4. Местоимения: личные, притяжательные, вопросительные, указательные, неопределенные и отрицательные.

5. Формы настоящего, прошедшего и будущего времени группы Indefinite действительного залога изъявительного наклонения. Спряжение глаголов to be, to have в Present, Past и Future Indefinite. Повелительное наклонение и его отрицательная форма.

6. Простое распространенное предложение: прямой порядок слов повествовательного и побудительного предложений в утвердительной и отрицательной формах, обратный порядок слов вопросительного предложения. Оборот there is/are.

MY FAMILY

A vocabulary defines a family as “people who are closely related”. But it is not just a group of relatives living in one place. All members of my family are very close friends of mine. We are five in the family: my parents, my sister, my grandmother and I.

First of all, some words about my parents. My mother and father have been married for twenty-six years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books, films, sports. For example, my father likes horror films and my mother likes "soap operas". My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesn't go in for sports. But my parents have the same opinion about my education and upbringing.

My mother's name is Elena Ivanova. She is forty-three years old, but she doesn’t look her age. She is an interior designer and likes her profession greatly. My mother always bears and forbears with me.

My father’s name is Pavel Ivanov and he is an experienced computer programmer. He is forty-five. My father knows all about computer and likes to repair old ones. He is also handy with many things. When he was a child, he liked to take everything to pieces. My grandmother told me a story that once my father tried to "repair" their kitchen clock. He managed to put all the wheels and screws back again – but the clock did not work. They had to give it to a repairman. Now he can fix almost everything: a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a fridge and what not.

My parents are hard-working people. My mother keeps house and takes care of me and my father. She is very good at cooking and she is clever with her hands. My father and I try to help her with the housework. I wash the dishes, go shopping and tidy our flat.

My grandmother is a pensioner. She lives with us and helps to run the house. She is fond of knitting and gardening.

My sister Helen is twenty-five. She is married and has a family of her own. She works as an accountant for a joint venture company. Her husband is a scientist. They have got twins: a daughter and a son. They go to a nursery school.

MY FLAT

We live in a new nine-storey block of flats. It is situated in a very picturesque place, but far from the centre of the city. Our house is a short walk from the bus stop. It usually takes us about an hour to get to the centre of the city. There is a big supermarket on the ground floor and it is very convenient to do every day shopping.

Our flat is on the first floor. It is very comfortable and well-planned. We have all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, gas, cold and hot running water and a telephone. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. There is also a balcony and we can enjoy a lovely view of the river.

The living room is the largest room in our flat and we use it as a dining room and as a sitting room. In the middle of the room, there is a big table and six chairs around it. Opposite the window, there is a wall unit with lots of books, a TV-set and a videocassette recorder. There are two comfortable armchairs and a small coffee table in the right-hand corner. There is also a sofa and an electric fire in our living room. We like the living room best of all, because in the evenings we often gather there to watch TV, talk and have parties.

My room is the smallest one in our flat, but it is very cozy and light. There is a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, an armchair and several bookshelves in my room. There is a thick carpet on the floor. The walls in my room are light brown and there are some big posters on them. There is a computer on the right-hand side of the room. I like my room very much, but from time to time I change it round. I quite often move the bed and change the posters on the wall.

Our kitchen is rather large and comfortable. It is very well equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave oven, a coffeemaker and a toaster. We haven't got a dishwasher yet, because it is very expensive. But I am sure we'll buy it in the nearest future. The nice curtains on the window make our kitchen very cosy.

DAILY ROUTINE

I’m Ann and a first year student at the university, where I’m studying English. My elder sister, Betty, is studying history at the same univer­sity. Betty can organise her time wisely, whereas I do not know what order I should do things in. I find it hard to get up on time, and usu­ally I do not get enough sleep. I have to wind two alarm-clocks to make sure I do not oversleep.

My sister, an early riser, is awake by 7 o'clock, refreshed and full of energy. While I'm wandering round the kitchen, fighting the urge to go back to bed, my sister man­ages to have a quick shower, make her bed, do her hair, have a full breakfast and set off to the university. It takes me an hour and a half to get ready. I have a hasty bite and rush out of the house. Even if I catch a bus at once I still arrive at the university 15 minutes late, which always makes me feel guilty.

My studies keep me busy all day long. I have 14 hours of English a week. I also have lectures and seminars. At lunchtime I meet up with my sister and we have a snack at the university cafe. After classes I make myself go to the library where I spend about six hours a week reading for my seminars.

My sister and I come home tired. I always find excuses to put my homework off. Unlike me, my sister manages to do the housework and get down to homework. I like the idea of going to bed early, but quite often I have to sit up late, brushing up on my grammar and vo­cabulary, though I feel sleepy.

As my sister and I do not get any time off during the week, we try to relax on the weekends. One of my greatest pleasures is to lie in bed and read my favourite books. My sister is a sporty person. To keep herself fit, Betty goes for a run in the park; from time to time she works out in the gym.

I hate staying in, and sometimes on Saturday night my sister takes me out to a concert or a play. Sometimes we go to a party or to a disco. But more often than not I end up catching up on my stu­dies and my sister goes out. I wonder how I manage to spoil my lei­sure time.

MY DAY OFF

A lot of people in our country work five days a week but students work six days. They have only one day off. It is Sunday.

I like this day very much. You needn't hurry anywhere and you may go wherever you like and do whatever you like. As I get very tired during the week I let myself sleep a little longer on Sunday. Sometimes I don’t get up till nine or ten o’clock. I read newspapers, books or listen to music.

As soon as I get up, I air the room, make my bed, have a shower, and clean my teeth. On Sundays my parents sleep a bit longer too, that is why we have neither breakfast nor lunch but brunch. All of us like porridge and fried eggs for breakfast, my parents usually have coffee with milk but I prefer apple juice. We do not go shopping on Sunday as my mother does it on Saturday. So after twelve o'clock I am free.

People spend their days off in different ways. Some of them prefer to stay at home and read a book or visit an art exhibition, a museum or a sport event. In the evening, as a rule, they go to a theatre or to see their friends. Other people prefer to spend their days off out of town.

As for me I also like to spend my days off in the country. I go in for sports, and on Sunday I go to the tennis court and play tennis for about two hours. I have been playing tennis since my 8th form and I can say that it helps me relax and feel well during the whole week. On my way home I usually drop in at the confectionery and buy a cherry cake because we are used to having something tasty for dinner. Sunday is the only day when we have dinner together. That is one of the reasons why I like Sundays.

After dinner we often go to the park which is not far from our house. It is very pleasant to walk there. We enjoy fresh air, beautiful scenery around us, and heart-to-heart talks.

In the evening we all get together. We have light supper, watch TV or read books. At ten o'clock on Sunday I start preparing for the university as I am always short of time on Monday morning. I enjoy my days off very much.

HOBBIES

Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting.

Hobbies are divided into four large groups: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things.

The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to traveling and from chess to volleyball.

Gardening is one of the oldest of man's hobbies. It is a well-known fact that the English are very fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses.

Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This is a relatively new hobby but it is becoming more and more popular.

Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts. Two of the most famous hobby painters were President Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill. Some hobbyists write music or play musical instruments. President Bill Clinton, for example, plays the saxophone.

Almost everyone collects something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, match-boxes, books, records, postcards, toys, watches. Some collections have no real value. Others become so large and so valuable that they are housed in museums and galleries. Many world-famous collections started in a small way with one or two items. People with a good deal of money often collect paintings, rare books and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries and public galleries so that others might take pleasure in seeing them.

No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. By reading about the things he is interested in, he is adding to what he knows. Learning things can be the most exciting aspect of a hobby.
