If I had known it before ...

HadI knownit before ...

If I were less tired ...

WereI less tired...

1) если я когда-либо выиграюмного денег, я куплю автомобиль (предположение о будущем);

If I won

If I should win

If I were to winI would (should) buy a car.

Should I win

Were I to win

If I had wona lot of money,

I should have boughtа саr.

Trаditionаl facsimile machines are eаsily understood. To operаte them is аs eаsy аs mаking a phone call: insert paper, diаl number, push button. The process becomes more complicated when a fax is sent by a PC. That involves special software to work with the fax modem5 on most computers. A company with a local area network can add fax capability to its server so that everyone on the network can send a message from any computer. Finally, a fax, or its equivalent, can undertake parts of its journey on the Internet. None of these chores is particularly expensive, but some services require the customer to buy software or pay a page rate or a monthly fee6. Others are offering their services for nothing7 at least at no cost to the user.

So how did we get to this moment in which the digital technology and its aged uncle, old-fashioned faxing, are thriving side by side?

The answer lies in adaptation. Unlike its doomed Mesozoic counterpart8, the fax has morphed into many new species9 while retaining its essential nature.

Сопоставьте также surviveи survival,particularи particularly,expenseи expensive,customи customer,monthи monthly,serveи server,useи user,adaptи adaptation,essenceи essential,recentи recently.

Обратите также внимание на слова, образованные конверсией: faxфакс и to faxпередавать сообщение по факсу (отсюда faxing—передача сообщений по факсу),callзвонить и (phone)callтелефонный звонок,costстоить и costстоимость (в тексте at no cost—бесплатно),to answerотвечать —answerответ,to studyизучать, исследовать и studyисследование.

A warm coat is a must(сущ. от гл. must)here in winter. It's not good literature, but it's a good read(чтиво — сущ.

a milk chocolate bar — плитка молочного шоколада

a window-cleaner — мойщик окон

a customs officer — таможенный служащий

Experience is a fine teacher, it's true.

But here is what makes me burn

Experience is always teaching me

Things I'd rather not learn.
