In the Dining–Car

John and his wife, Angela, usually go abroad for their holidays. Last year they went to a small town in Oslavia. They also spent a very exciting holiday in Italy recently. They caught a plane from London to Paris, then they travelled by train to Istanbul. The train went very slowly through the mountains in Northern Italy.

John and Angela were having dinner in the dining–car when the train stopped suddenly. They looked out of the window. It was getting dark, but they seemed to be in a valley. They could see quite a lot of men in green around the train.

One of the guards was arguing angrily. Some of the men climbed quickly onto the train. John thought he could see fire-arms, but it was too dark to be sure. A few minutes later the dining–car was full of men. They asked everybody for their passports and looked at them hurriedly.

Angela decided that the men must be police or immigration officials. A man, who was sitting quietly at the table, seemed very worried. One of the men in green noticed him, asked for his passport again and checked it very carefully. He nodded to another official and they went towards the man. The next moments he had jumped onto the feet, and was trying desperately to get out of the window but it was too small. He kicked the nearest official hard in the stomach. The poor man groaned loudly and fell heavily onto the table. Soup splashed all over Angela and her husband. Other officials seized the man and led him away. One of the colleagues explained that the man they had arrested was by the Italian police for stealing three painting from the Uffizzi Gallery in Florence several weeks before.
